A 24-year-old man is facing murder charges in connection with a fatal North Side crash early Friday.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but Thomas Haas may have been speeding when he crashed his friend's Mercury Grand Marquis into another car, said Sgt. Carlos Valdez, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
He said Haas ran from the scene, near East Copper Street and North Mountain Avenue, as Robert Lane, 41, and Adam Oreck, 44, lay dying from their injuries. Both were thrown from the car.
Police also are investigating the possibility that Haas was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, Valdez said.
Police found Haas at a friend's house, near North Campbell Avenue and East Fort Lowell Road, a short time after the crash. He was arrested and booked into the Pima County jail on two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of criminal damage and one count of leaving the scene of a fatal crash. More charges may be coming, Valdez said.
The crash happened four blocks from Oreck's home. Oreck was an inventor and entrepreneur who was developing footwear products from his home-based business, UFIT.
Lane's family is still recovering from the death of his father, said Lane's brother-in-law, Paul Taylor. Robert G. Lane died of natural causes April 7. His obituary ran in the Star on Friday.
Oreck was a good friend of Lane, a master tile layer who was devoted to his family, said Lane's sister, Barbara Lane-Brower.
"There are not enough nice things to say about him," she said. "He was a great man."
