Looks like the pool of competitors for the 'stang (performance wise) just got bigger! Please discuss...

Real-world BMW 335i 0-60, 1/4 mile times
Car magazines are beginning to publish statistics from their in-depth tests of the new twin-turbo BMW 335i coupe. According to Automobile magazine, the four-seater can hit 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds — compared to the current M3's 4.8. Meanwhile, the quarter-mile sprint takes 13.6 seconds, according to the magazine — only slightly slower than the M3's 13.4 second run. 0-100 mph for the 335i takes 12.7 seconds, compared to 11.5 for the M3. Over in Germany, Auto Zeitung is reporting a 0-62 mph time of 5.3 seconds, 0-100 mph time of 11.9 seconds, and a 0-124 mph time of 18.7 seconds for the automatic version of the 335i. Overall, it seems the new six-speed auto performs almost identically to its manual counterpart. However, the 0-100 mph time appears to be significantly faster for the automatic version. On this car, there's actually a good article here:
http://www.automobilemag.com/feature...ter/index.html
The interesting thing they found out is that they believe BMW has underrated the numbers for the 335i engine.
What they noticed is that the 335i engine puts out at the wheels some 275 hp and 300 lbs/ft of torque. Considering that they tested a 330Ci and it had 200 hp and 180 lbs/ft at the wheels, so roughly a 20 % loss from the official numbers, they came to the conclusion that the 335i is more around 350 hp and 360 lbs/ft !
Now, I don't know if this is true but there is some logic to it, so I can't say they are wrong. Also perhaps BMW tweaked that 335i quite a bit before sending it to them, who knows...Honestly I wish someone could dyno a 335i that comes from a dealership lot, rather than directly from BMW...
Still, I personally think that with 300 hp and 300 lbs/ft of torque, it's a darn good vehicle. But if it turns out that it REALLY has 350 hp and 360 lbs/ft, I think that at 42k you can basically get a mini M3...
Not bad at all, IMO...

This car isn't in the same realm as the Mustang GT. Performance wise it may be similar, but you can bet this BMW will be darn close to $50,000. That's almost 2 Mustang GTs by my math.

The 335i starts at 42k and the new M3, which should arrive in 07, will have a V8 and 400-420 hp. Seen that its closest competitor is the Audi RS4 priced at 66k (+2.3k gas guzzler tax) means that the new M3 will at least be over 60k.
Therefore, having a 335i at 42 does indeed make sense for BMW...

of course its not in the same realm, but for those that like to do the "magazine racing" talk the, performance #'s are incredible if indeed true.
i would agree on the $50k, my bet will be between $50 - 55k. i remember a coworker paying $54k for an '04 or '05 330ci, what a fool!!

Thanks for the info... and it does make sense

It's not a bad car and it's certainly pretty quick, but for around $45k, you're paying for more then just power. I wouldnt mind having an M3, but at is $60k price it makes no sense. You have to really be in love with the 'I drive a BMW' image to buy the car for that much money.

The new M3 will likely be one of the fastest, highest quality, most comfortable, and best handling coupes under $60k. If one has the money, the M3 makes sense for more reasons than badge slavery. Now "I wouldn't mind having a GT500, but at its $55k price it makes no sense. You have to really be in love wiht the 'I drive a Shelby' image to buy the car for that much money" I would agree with.

And by the way, I do agree with your $55k Shelby assement.

Though I love M3s, they are great cars. I had two of them...

And oddly enough, it says the 335i is 40k, but I remember seeing 42k in other articles. Oh well, I made a mistake, sorry about that.
So, the 335i is priced at $40,600. Not 50 or 55...

Yeah, I really doubt the M3 will be more than an additional $20k over this twin turbo inline six beast. Just because Audi made the mistake of overinvesting (and thus forced to overprice) the RS4 doesn't mean BMW will.
Furthermore, I think the ADMs will start larger and last longer for the 500hp first "Shelby" in 37 years than those placed on the latest iteration M3.

But I don't think it'll be the case because:
1 - If you look at the "brawl" among BMW and Audi as far as performance models are concerned, the current S4 and M3 are within 2k from each other. Then Audi produces the RS4 with 420 hp and prices it at 68k (this though is more a result of Audi USA rather than Audi itself. I say this because in Europe the RS4 is on average 25-35 % more expensive than an S4, depending in what country you are in. But in the USA an RS4 is 44 % more expensive than a S4...if they had followed what happened in Europe, it should have been 57/62k...but I guess Audi USA got greedy...)...and now BMW is about to make a new M3 with more or less the same power as the RS4...chances are the price will be very close to the RS4...
2 - If you look at BMW's future line up for performance vehicles (=sporty/sport cars), they have the 335i at 40k with 300 hp...then the Z4 M Coupe at 49k and the Z4 M Roadster at 51k, both with 330 hp...then the M5 at 81k and 500 hp, finally the M6 at 500 hp and 96k...
The gap in between the Z4 M Roadster (51k) and the M5 (81k), gives me the idea that the M3 with its V8 derived from the V10 of the M5 and 400-420 hp will be put right smack in the middle: 66k. Also another factor that should be kept in mind is the fact that the M3 most likely will have more tech gadgets than the Z4 M various iterations, I believe this will increase the M3's price...say another 2-3k more ? At the end you get to 68k as well...
I think it makes sense...
