Porsche’s anticipated fourth model line has a name: Panamera. Registered by Porsche at the same time as the Cayman moniker it is applying to the upcoming Boxster-based coupe, the new name is expected to grace a concept version of the car, which insiders describe as a combination of coupe and sedan, at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
Due out in 2008, the Panamera has been conceived as successor to the 928. Designed with space for four adults, it is also tipped to come clothed in a four-door body in a move that will pitch it into direct competition with cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Maserati Quattroporte.
Secrecy surrounds the mechanical basis for the new car, though the Stuttgart rumor mill suggests Porsche chairman Wendelin Wiedeking has forged links with Volkswagen on a new rear-wheel-drive platform program in a move similar to that undertaken with the Cayenne and Touareg. Volkswagen chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder is interested in adding a new rear-wheel-drive model to the Volkswagen lineup between the Passat and Phaeton, and after the recent breakdown in talks with Maserati, it seems additional cooperation with Porsche may be in the cards.
Power for the new car is set to come from the same 4.5-liter V8 engines as those offered on the Cayenne. They include a naturally aspirated version with 340 hp and a turboÂ*charged unit with 450 hp. An even more powerful model with more than 500 hp is also in the pipeline. Up to 20,000 examples of the Panamera are expected to roll annually from Porsche’s Leipzig factory in Germany, where it will be produced alongside the Cayenne.

I like it a lot! I like this new breed of sporty large sedans. Its cool that the Quattroporte and the CLS will have someone else to play with. I really like that tail, talk about a short deck. Happy to finally see what this might look like, thanks Jason.

well, i think this is much less of a stretch than the Cayenne was. I'm surprised how shocked people are. They've already made a 4-door, very capable off-roader, but making a low slung sports sedan is worthy of RIP Porsche?? I think this car is pretty reasonable. Its not at all bulky by the looks of these renderings. I think it looks like it would be the slickest and probably quickest sedan out there (500hp? bet it would weigh a lot less than an M5 too).
I'd like to see them axe the Cayenne and do this instead. The Cayenne is one of those cars that really ticks me off cause its got all this capability that will never be used, cause nobody'll wanna dirty it or scratch it. This Panamera is just something that can go fast and carry 4 people, no wasted capability. Of course the Cayenne is making Porsche tons of money and they won't be canning it for a couple years.

On another note...
Do you think the reason suicide doors never seem to make it to production is the fear of someone accidentally opening the rear-hinged door at highway speeds and it getting flung full open by the wind and not being able to shut it unless the car is stopped? I wonder if the suiced doors could help reduce braking distances. Talk about air brakes!

I'm gonna have to stand up for Porsche here...whenever anyone thinks about a Porsche, all they remember is the 911 and 356...
Porsche has made a ton of different model types, including a jeep type truck in the 1950s(only 500 or so made) a 4-wheel drive Electric car (one of the first to bear the name Porsche) and a ton of different one offs..
Basically, Porsche's motto is that if it presents a challenge, they will take it on. I wouldn't be surprised to see a hybrid Cayenne out in a few years along side the Panamera (shouldn't it be Panamerica or is it some political thing?) along with a possible entry level Porsche along the lines of the 928 (a front engine, rwd, GT)
