Pontiac will get Zeta RWD car, but it won't be a Firebird
General Motors is definitely considering building a Pontiac on its new Zeta rear-wheel-drive architecture, but it won't use the Firebird nameplate. In an interview of Edmunds, Jim R. Hopson, Communications Manager for Pontiac, said, "we're looking at developing a vehicle on the architecture that's under the Camaro, it just won't be called a Firebird.
Using the GTO moniker remains a possibility, though some enthusiasts likely feel the name has been damaged in recent years due to the lackluster design of the previous GTO.

I'll bet they'll call it GTO
But to ignore the TransAM and Firebird names and their relation to the Camaro is silly. They could position the car as a more upscale G35 fighter with better quality interiors and desireable bits like NAV, HID, DSG, etc etc

Keep the Firebird and read my lips: NO MORE BADGE ENGINEERING.
I agree with Boomer. I expect it will be a new GTO, which they've actually been talking about quite a bit recently.

I think having a Camaro, Firebird and GTO together would just have too many cars stepping on each other's toes. Chevy will have the Camaro for the more affordable pony car crowd whereas Pontiac will get a more upscale GTO as more of a gentleman's (ladies?) high-performance coupe (I hate to say muscle car as that implies an overpowered sedan with the handling and braking capability of a garbage truck). A Firebird would have a tight fit in this mix and not be worth the effort, IMHO.
I caught this picture of it on Yahoo. Gives a little more than the original.
