My "other" car.

About a year ago my boyfriend approached me about a car he had worked on a few years. I was interested, because it was different. Well, long story short it became our project. We've both put in quite a bit into this project and today I can finally say "we're about half way there". :rofl2:

Just a little info on the car itself. The chassis is a 1971 Datsun 240z. The motor is a rb26dett out of 1989 Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R. The Skyline owner had been in a rear-end collision where a F150 doing about 45 hit him while he was at a dead stop. Needless to say, the body was forever gone. Jonathan(the boyfriend) performed the swap, though not as easily as i've just said it.

The motor needed a refresh and the thought of "well...might as well build it" came up. Here are a few pics for you guys.

Nice, I'll bet that thing will be a sweetheart of a car. I always thought the first gen Z car was the best looking of the bunch, followed closely by the 300Z. If only the current 370Zs great mechanicals were packaged in such a slim and trim form rather than the thick and pudgy current body.

07S197 10/20/09 02:15 PM

Thats pretty sweet. Gonna keep the 240Z the same color? I like where you went with the color of the block and think that the contrast on a yellow engine bay would be pretty cool. However a black Z to match your Gt would be pretty sweet too.

You hit it right on the nose. The Z is going to be black to work with the Mustang. The engine bay was rattle canned black before the motor was dropped in a few days ago and the yellow is the original color which is just until we get it to paint eventually. The block was originally meant to be black but it worked out being purple. A lot of the parts on the motor are HKS and their signature color is purple, hence the cam gears and the true HKS purple timing belt. If you notice the fuel rail is also purple. We started out with the idea to match each other since this is our biggest passion that we happen to share and we spend a lot of our lives around it.

Evil_Capri 10/21/09 04:58 AM

Darn cool! Keep us posted! :nice:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1.../Manifold1.jpg

The stock manifold looks tiny compared to the Greddy. The rb had problems of going lean in cylinder 6 because of the manifold design choking air out of it, so the Greddy solves that problem.

We haven't been entirely alone in this project. Some of the guys at the shop have lent a helping hand and we're thankful to each of them for it.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1.../FuelTank1.jpg

Carlos, the miner-looking guy is going to finish up the wiring, though not before he and Jonathan finish up the fuel system.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...atBracket1.jpg

Messing with the brackets to the seats we're using out of a Mitsubishi Evo 9. We were having an open house the next day so we thought to put the seats in even though the custom brackets haven't been fabricated yet, just to give an idea of what the interior is going to look like.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...ild/Hatch1.jpg

I have the very fun job of scraping the paint out of the hatch so we can paint it and put the battery in as well as anything else going in there. I may think about my words next time before I say "What do you need me to do?" :screwy:

Antigini-GT/CS 10/21/09 06:21 PM

This is going to be exciting once its all said and done. We're shooting for 1,000 at the wheels, though the boost will hardly ever be cranked up that high. Its just more of a status than anything. I can't wait to drive it. Heck, I can't wait to hear it start up for the first time!

1,000 horsepower in a Z? Oh my

EagleStroker 10/21/09 07:03 PM

Ah, I love talking to our customers with imports! They always have the most interesting swaps. I dig that motor AND the car it's going in - have to ask, what rods are those?

PS Where's my evo seats?

Awesome car Antigini!!!

My brother had a '70 or '71 yellow 240Z back in high school in the 80's. I loved that car. The car itself is cool enough, but the engine is even sicker....:hail:

I've been keeping an eye out for Evo seats! If we ever decide to go a different route with the seats, you'll be the first to know.

As for the rods, they're Eagle. Pistons are Wiseco.

I would recognize our design/bolt anywhere, but I like to ask :nice: thanks for paying my check!

So what's the time line for finishing this?

You work for Eagle? Kind of explains your name now! :D

There really isn't a timeline. The shop is crazy busy right now so we'll just have to see when there is some time. The motor was dropped in a few days ago and hooked up to the tranny, but that's about all the progress that's been made. Carlos, the guy who's going to finish up the wiring works for the Border Patrol out of town, so he's only here a couple days out of the month. Our welder, who is AWESOME by the way, is really busy with his real-world job as well so the seat brackets may take a while. It sucks when the real world gets in the way of your fun. :bs:

I run into the same thing when pulling favors from a few guys at the shop. I do work for them, it's really how I came about buying this car to tell the truth. I always wanted a Cobra, or a few imports I won't mention, but at 6'4 250 I don't fit in most very well! Not something I completely broadcast (where I work) but I am proud of what I do!

I'll make sure to check the thread when you update, I have a soft spot for those cars!

StangMahn 10/22/09 07:30 AM

this project is incredible! I'm more of a muscle car guy myself, but this looks awesome! I've always loved the way the old Z's looked

1999Pony 10/22/09 07:37 AM

Thats awesome. I have a 83 280 ZX waiting for an LS1 or Built 302. I like the Skyline motor though!

I must say, although I prefer a V-8 anyday, I got pretty giddy looking at the pics. Motor looks awesome and I'm sure it'll run just as well. Good luck with it, I'm sure it'll be great fun!

Well, i'll go ahead and update since I got a bump!

The car is officially sitting in my garage, while the Mustang sleeps outside. I couldn't convince my mother that the Mustang was better and should be inside as well. :screwy:

Anyway, things at the place we were at had issues with the owner not being completely honest and whatnot, so we packed up and took our things. Out of this very bad problem, something very good is coming from the ashes. Jon and I had been discussing opening our own shop for years now. We've had pretty much everything sorted out except for a name and everything seemed to have just fallen into place. So hopefully by the end of February, we'll be opening our doors. There are things which still need to be done such as the wiring, the fuel system and we have to fab up some pieces and have one last piece of intercooler piping made. Since this is going to be our shop car, it would be nice to have it running sometime in the summer but with how busy we're hoping to be since we've been getting a lot of buzz locally, I honestly don't see it happening.

I may take some pics of it sitting pretty to post for you guys later just so this thread doesn't collect TOO much dust! :nice:

Haha let me be more specific, is this a body of the chassis kind of build/shop? I think a good example of something to look at is a good customer of ours named AR Fabrication, being your into imports you might be familiar with the name? An AWD dyno and a dyno day can do wonders for business!

We're pretty much going to stick with motor builds, upgrades and suspension work. We've got fellow enthusiasts/friends who do pretty much everything else in their businesses, so we all send work to each other and "keep it in the family" so to speak.

As for a dyno, I never heard it described better than this. "A dyno is just a one-hundred thousand dollar wrench." We're not interested in a dyno in the slightest. There are several in the city which are in shops were friendly with so its never an issue for us to rent one out for the day. We're starting off small and humble and in five years, we'll see where we stand. :nice:

Yeah, I had thought about that swap! I was telling the boyfriend we should consider it later since the rb is already build and purple and i'm sure the Mustang wouldn't mind...:heh: I will admit though it would look strange with a huge single exhaust, so if we ever did i'd have to make it a dual exhaust just for the looks. For now though, we've settled on just swapping a 5.0 into it in a couple years. ;)

The single exhaust issue shouldn't be a problem if it's done to a standard Mustang. Just say it only has an inline six w a three inch exhaust. :rofl2:

The rest of the parts to get it running are going to be ordered tomorrow! Since this is our dedicated shop car and is so close to running, we're going to make the time to get it that way. We've just been so busy getting the shop ready everything else has been on the back burner. Maybe it'll be able to make it out to TX2k10. :headspin:

If we had shirts, I would hook you up. The last shirt I got is maybe 5 years old! :rofl2: Something about a first crank is magical, and after a few moments when/if nothing breaks it makes it even better.

Yeah, if something breaks I think we're all just going to go stand in a corner for a while. Then again we've been too **** busy doing everything else!

Robert, i've got some professionally shot pictures stored away of it, but those were taken before the motor was in the car, so i'd like to send you one of it in the engine bay. If you happen to like these pics, just let me know so I can send you one this week. By the way, the only thing we ask in return is that you send us a picture back of the picture of Eagle's wall. We'd like to be able to show our hard work on Eagle's wall. I didn't think Jon or anyone else would be excited about it, but they are.

We got the rest of the fuel fittings in! Love those black fittings. We also got the 3"-4" coupler and hopefully the short piece of piping we need will come in tomorrow so that can be taken care of. If you look toward the passenger side you can see just how short the piping is, so the efficiency of the airflow is amazing. We also noted with the intercooler taped off it looks like an oil filter. :wtf: Hopefully the car will get up in the air this week so the fuel system can get put on!

That oil was just put in the motor to rotate it a bit since its been sitting for a while, so we didn't need anything expensive. As for oil, i'm not sure what we'll be using exactly.

Project has been put on the back burner for a bit(yet again). We've been busy trying to get some cars ready for a SuperLap at our local(sort of) road course track. Then one of our partners got sick, I got sick and we had a last minute addition to our line-up. Busy week, but i'm not complaining. :nice: So hopefully soon we'll have a day where I can lock the boys in the back and get some work done!

Guessing fuel cell in the trunk/spare tire area and maybe a "quick filler" type setup in the rear panel between the tail lights or behind the "Z emblem" (if it has them) on the quarter panel? Plus battery relocation to the rear, given the kill switch behind the factory fuel door.

We're almost there! I'll have more pictures soon from the new exciting things going on. The fuel system is in place, the wiring is getting done, the switch panel has been custom made and all we need is time. We're hosting a Nissan/Infinity/Datsun meet here at the shop on the 24th of this month and we want the car running by then. And then after that...well let's just say there's going to be a whole lot of chromoly going into it. :bling:

Antigini-GT/CS 2/13/11 11:04 AM

Holy old thread update, Batman!

Well, this project has made progress since I last left off. When I last posted we were about to attempt start up, get all the little things in order and start work on repairing rust and also work on getting a shortened 9 inch in the rear.

As we all know, sometimes life just doesn't go according to plan.

So this past week all of the management items were ordered. Did I mention we decided to go a COMPLETELY different route? Originally it was decided to use the Apex'i PowerFC as management, however I convinced Jonathan to go with the AEM EMS as it is a 100% tunable program, and its just better. Of course considering its twice as good, it also costs twice as much. So out with the old, in with the new!

http://d5otzd52uv6zz.cloudfront.net/...9cb53e-800.jpg

AEM EMS Series 2. A lot of my pushing to go with AEM was backed by wanting Jonathan himself to tune the car. It'll give us more of an edge since we CAN claim all of the work was 100% ours. Plus, with the AEM we can just plug in and datalog whenever we feel like it or make tweaks on race days and whatnot.

Along with the new management, there's also been a slight change. We are no longer going to use the 240Z. Its a sad day, but we also came to the realization building a drag-only car really won't be too much fun, and we deal more with drifting/road racing. So instead, we're going to use this...

https://themustangsource.com/images/...03765/2518.jpg

1997 Nissan 240sx SE trim. And yes, its purple.

With this new chassis, all the weight won't be right in front, and we'll be able to road race/time attack, drift and drag race...though no hard launches in drag as its going to retain the IRS.

Custom mounts and custom chromoly driveshaft are going to be ordered Monday morning. After that we'll dive into suspension. From there its wheels, tires and brakes. For stopping power, we're going with the 350Z brembo rotors/calipers since they will just bolt right up. Enkei RPF1's wrapped in Nitto NT01 275's all the way around.

http://www.wheelstudio.com/content/p...50420/main.jpg

The fuel system has completely changed as well. We won't be using a fuel cell, but instead a pair of the new Deatschwerks 300lph in-tank pumps.

The good thing about using this new car, even though we have to pour a little more into it initially to get everything up and running is in the longrun, it'll be cheaper! This car has no rust on it, the frame is perfect and its so much more diverse. Eventually we'll attach a massive(but functional) wing on it, so big it'll be able to substitute as a bench when not in use. We're also in works for some aero as this car is going to need it.

I'll start posting pictures once we start doing a little more.

sweet! :nice:

hi5.0 2/13/11 01:38 PM

Whoa! Complete 180. Hardly see any S14 240 SX "Kouki" around here - mainly S13s and S14 "Zenki" models. :poke:So what will become of the 240Z? Wangan Midnight replica? IMSA replica?
And if you're going to keep it purple, please use a different shade - de Pinoy Pfurple es keeling meh. :jester:

Antigini-GT/CS 2/13/11 04:07 PM

That purple is "for now". Its actually spray paint. lol We got bored one week...and well, yeah. Its going to get a paint job in time, but its not the priority.

As for the 240z, a customer of ours who had a 280z and a 300zx bought it. We're going to pull the s14 sr20det out of the s14 and throw it into the 240z. Its also going to get an intake/exhaust manifold before it goes in as well. Come summer, we'll have a 280z with s13 sr20, 240z with s14 sr20 and another 280z with an s15 sr20 complete with 6 speed. I can't wait to line those up in front of the shop!

I'm a kouki fan myself. :nice:

Antigini-GT/CS 2/23/11 11:25 PM

Got the AEM in last week.

Antigini-GT/CS 3/11/11 12:09 AM

Now we're getting serious...

I've just ordered this week:

http://www.mckinneymotorsports.com/i...roducts/12.jpg

Mounts with solid aluminum motor mounts.

http://www.mckinneymotorsports.com/i...roducts/66.jpg

Downpipe which will then go to probably a 4" exhaust. :-D

http://www.mckinneymotorsports.com/i...roducts/59.jpg

1,000 horsepower 3 core intercooler with minimal loss. At full flow for this bad body, we won't see more than 3-5ish psi lost.

I also ordered/received a new(to us) transmission, complete with lower harness, as well as the engine harness which we are sending out for rewiring because we're just too **** busy to do it ourselves right now.

Paint shop has been notified and the car will be going in for a new paint scheme in a few weeks hopefully. Nothing fancy though since we plan on throwing this thing around and off course into dirty and rocks.

We FINALLY made a suspension choice. We have begun a relationship with Fortune Auto who is going to sponsor this car. We will be rocking the FA 510 series coilover with optional Swift springs front/rear with a spring rating of 12k front, 9k rear. We will also be running their suspension arms package. The coilovers are being custom built to our specs for our type of aero we will be running, as well as track surfaces we expect to encounter.

Next on the list...

http://www.performanceplustire.com/i...ucts4/9398.jpg

I'll get the Nitto NT01's ordered here sooner or later. We're going to be running 275/40/17's on all four corners, which means we're going to have to roll those front fenders!

I also ordered the 1,000hp 3.5" aluminum driveshaft.

Poor Mustang is starting to feel abandoned. lol :(

hi5.0 3/11/11 11:20 AM

You can work on the Mustang next after this one is sorted out. :D BTW, have seen a couple cherry-looking "Kouki" S14s on the road - "original owner cars". Have even seen a modified S13 with a S15 front clip for sale - go figure.

edumspeed 3/11/11 06:25 PM

That thing's gonna be a beast. Awesome!

Antigini-GT/CS 3/20/11 02:18 AM

Coilovers/suspension arms are stuck in Japan. :banghead: Hopefully they'll leave this week for the US.

However, on a good note I ordered the solid aluminum subframe bushings. We should also be seeing the driveshaft this week!

Antigini-GT/CS 3/29/11 12:28 AM

Progress!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...3-28132710.jpg

They're here!

FortuneAuto 510 series coilovers with custom rates, valving and optional Swift Springs. The arms are also the FIRST production set of their 240 arms.

The rb26 has also left its bed in the 240z. I'll snap some pics for updated parts!

Oh yeah, almost forgot this....6ft of this shiny stuff!

http://www.fortune-auto.net/parts/Fortune%20Gold.jpg

Antigini-GT/CS 4/7/11 01:13 AM

3.5" custom driveshaft is in! Downpipe and intercooler are being made as we speak.

I also ordered the wheels today. We made the decision to not put such nice(and costly) wheels on the car since we know for a fact its going to get thrown into the dirt at the track, so we opted for the brand new XXR, which arrived just this week, and are mostly on back order already. I was lucky to find a set since I didn't pre-order.

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/n...omiumfront.jpg

17x9.5 +25 all around. Now we just need some 275/40/17 NT01's to go on them!

Antigini-GT/CS 8/5/11 12:40 AM

Its been a few months since i've updated...

http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/a...0280z/NT01.jpg

The wheel/tire come has been shipped, mounted and white-walled! As mentioned before, 275/40/17 on all four corners. This is actually causing us to need rear overfenders as well as fronts, so I just added that to the "must order" list.

http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/a...0z/S14cage.jpg

The cage is also in! A while ago we stripped the interior, performed the dry ice method and sent the car out for cage treatment, as well as filling in the sunroof. Overall we lost a little over 100lbs in sunroof/metal removed from caging/sound deadening. I'd be willing to bet its going to be close to 200lbs with the window motors, glass(window net), interior, radio, etc.

The car is going to get painted in the next month or so, depending on how quick we can get these fenders and make them work. We finished up a few loose ends on the motor, so it now sits on a stand, waiting patiently...

Antigini-GT/CS 8/15/11 11:36 PM

The new Bride Zeta III XL(or "fat American seat" as we've dubbed it) along with its slider rail(because i'm short) have arrived. Along with it, the Crow purple 4 point harness, purple window net, Shine Auto Project aero kit along with rear carbon fiber diffuser, JDM rear bumper(required with the Shine kit), oil cooler, wheel spacers, and water pipe for the motor which was nearly impossible to find have arrived. I've ordered the rear 50mm fenders from Origin, though the front we have to go a different route since the Origins are on backorder until November. Those will be 30mm.

Next up will be front fenders since we want to get this car to the paint shop ASAP. Tow hooks need to be ordered along with padding for the cage, 2 fire suppression systems, front fenders and several other "small" items I just can't remember right now.

Our goal was to have this car up and running in November to make the Redline time attack event in Las Vegas right after SEMA, but having discovered some things, we decided against the idea and have once again pushed back the date in which we would like this car to run. At this point that main factor in time is going to be how long the paint shop takes to work in these fiberglass fenders since they had originally quoted 3 weeks for paint alone. I hope to drive this car before 2012.

EagleStroker 8/25/11 11:57 PM

Glad to see an update

Antigini-GT/CS 8/26/11 01:01 AM

Purple tow hooks have arrived. Differential is on its way and i've got a bunch of Motul fluid ready to go in.

Getting closer! Still looking for fenders.... :banghead:

blackgt87 8/26/11 07:26 AM

A buddy of mine just got his 1989 240 done, it has an RB30 with an RB26 head and a 62mm precision on ~20 psi. Made 530whp and went 11.79 @ 128 on et streets (1.75 60') on his first pass ever. Never got back into the 11's that day but consistently trapped 122-124. Pretty cool car, and really nasty brake boosted on the highway.

Antigini-GT/CS 8/26/11 11:42 PM

Wow, that's a great project! So many people start an rb26/30 and never finish because its so expensive and takes so much more than an rb25.

Did he use the rb25 or 300zx tranny?

blackgt87 8/27/11 05:55 AM

Im pretty sure the rb25, but I never asked him specifically.

He said there aren't many of those done and running really at all.

Antigini-GT/CS 8/28/11 01:24 PM

The rb25 tranny is absolutely better, especially since the z32's have a tendency for 4th to have issues. We originally had a z32 mated to the rb26 but upgraded and went with a Spec super twin.

No, there aren't many rb26 swapped cars running around. The reason for that is cost. The motor alone is a good $4,500 while a full rb25 motorset is $2,500. A lot of people start the project but end up selling it or parking it because it takes quite a bit of time and money.

On another note, I actually just picked up a 95 240 for a daily driver so I can park my Mustang.

I know there aren't many rb26 cars but he made it sound like there are even less rb30 bottom end / rb26 head cars.

At any rate your daily sounds cooler than my cavalier lol.

slostang 8/28/11 02:22 PM

Sell you a 2JZ for it ;)

Awesome build, will be fun when its done.

I would love to build a drift car, 1400 wheel is only so much fun. A streetable 400-500 wheel drift car would be wonderful..

Antigini-GT/CS 8/31/11 09:40 PM

I wouldn't mind throwing a 2j in a 240, and especially wouldn't mind a 6spd mated to it. We've got a few 2j projects going on right now, actually. My latest Supra owner dropped off his tt for t81 single upgrade, then the next week dropped off an LS400 with another 2jz for swap he decided he wanted to pick up. Normally we're pretty Nissan-rich, but lately we've been pretty Toyota rich.

Update time...I have a few pictures and great news. I have FINALLY found front fenders. They should be arriving next week.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...derCutting.jpg

Holy crap, someone actually let me play with a power tool! I always love getting my hands dirty, especially since i'm usually busy running around or chatting with customers. I take every opportunity to work on this car that I can.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...e/Fenders1.jpg

The end result of the cutting, bending, welding, spraying and one whole roll of blue tape later....we can now fit the rear fenders.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ffuserMock.jpg

Here is the rear, all mocked up. We're not playing around with the aero one bit, as you can tell.

Antigini-GT/CS 9/5/11 09:06 PM

Front fenders arrived. The driver side is broken. :banghead::banghead::banghead: :censored:

Antigini-GT/CS 9/17/11 01:20 AM

NON-broken front fenders are in! Car has been properly washed and now lives in the paint shop for the next few weeks. We'll see how long it takes them.

All 3 valve covers and calipers have been powder coated!

Aaaaaaaand on a different note, I may have bought a little something for the 240 I recently purchased. Oops?

edumspeed 9/25/11 08:40 AM

Ronin38 9/25/11 11:49 AM

Oops?! I know what I do when I say oops... What did you do?!

:D

Antigini-GT/CS 9/25/11 11:46 PM

I bought my next project for a year. :panic: I picked up an rb25 with a brand new ACT clutch, rb25 tranny and all accessories, uncut harness and ecu. It was just too good of a deal not to go for. Sooooo i'm going to start picking up parts for it piece by piece since I just want to build it. Right now I want to say 400rwhp is the goal, but considering the turbo is going to be one of the last pieces i'll buy, we'll see what happens between then and now. It is going to get build thought, that's for sure.

Only bad thing about this is the Mustang isn't going to be seeing any money for a bit. :(

Antigini-GT/CS 11/30/11 08:29 PM

Update! No pics as of yet though...

Okay, so we had a CLEAN 98(the most rare) fall into our laps with a salvage title. All the damage is to the suspension, however the body remains 100% clean. We started parting it out today and will be using the trunk lid, Greddy tower brace and Seibon carbon fiber hood for the race car. We're only a little worried the hood won't clear the motor as they sit a little high. If not, then i'll be using the hood for my 240!

I also ordered a brand new set of corner lights and European glass headlights. The Euro lights are the same as the JDM which moves the projector over a little but also has a larger projector. Already have the hi/lo HID kits from HIDGUY, which in my opinion are the absolute best on the market right now.

The car has been painted! I went into the paint booth today and had a look at it. I'm so happy this huge step has finally been taken and its a huge step in the right direction in what feels like the longest journey of my life. This has helped to renew the fire for this project. We should be getting it back next week. Problem is now that we finally have it back we don't have the time to work on it. :rofl2::banghead:

We picked up a Kognition chassis mount wing. This thing is SERIOUS! It creates a little over 1,000 ft/lbs of downforce at 140mph. We threw a Kognition on a customer's 280z and even at its softest degree setting it planted the car. We're completely sold on this product and cannot wait to feel it in action.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...n5ROB_8455.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...n5ROB_8334.jpg

Kognition only made 2 of these and we've got one of them.

On another note, my 240 hasn't changed. However, because of this part out I now have all the parts for my front end conversion, except a hood and driver side headlight since it was broken. I should be receiving the new headlight in a week or two. I also have taken the tail lights which are rather expensive on their own. I will also be trading my grey interior for the black interior and i'm playing with the idea of swapping my 4 lug for the 5 lug. So that's some pretty big progress!

Pictures to come...

Don't I know it. We got half of the fuel system in after 5 weeks. :bad: So Monday morning I'm going to have a talk with my provider and get this stuff overnighted.

This delay only makes us want to finish it that much faster.
