Actually Mazda is made by a American Manufacture, Ford owns it.

I will say, even though it's on this list, I'd buy another 6 in heartbeat (but this time I'd be sure to get the optional side curtain air bags!)

By the way... the ones with the side air bags passed just fine. It was the ones without that didn't do well in the test. I looked that up cause I was just as surprised as you to see it on the list.
Most of the other vehicles failed due to poor rear and frontal offset results.

The Mazda6 is made in the same place as the Mustang - AAI.

The safety issue isn't about where it's made but where it was designed - Japan.

Where it's designed has little to do with it. There are plenty of safe cars coming out of Japan, and plenty of unsafe cars designed in the US. It's a question of what the car is designed for. All these cars are designed to be small fuel efficient transportation and that's about it.
Keep in mind the Toyota they tested was without side airbags, which are optional. With them the car gets the second highest rating.
Where it is built can be a factor - I forget the car, believe it's a Ford/Mazda shared platform, same design, but one is built in Mexico, one in the US. The one in the US is a more dependable and safer vehicle from what I recall. Would have to research that a bit.
Saying that "designed in Japan" equals unsafe is baseless, no matter how often you repeat it.

The trend is that they are all small cars. Yes plenty of safe cars come from japan. Just look at the Subaru's.

While that's true, you failed to quote the next line. The full text from the article:
Let me add my own caveat to that quote. Improvements in one of the three factors they use impacts the whole car's ranking. So again, with the airbag option, there are vehicles that rank lower than the Corolla, including Domestic ones.
We were surprised to find such poor ratings for the Corolla, a car we had thought was in fact one of the market's safest. But the low scores come with caveats. For one thing, since model-year 2004, the Corolla's rear crash-test score has dropped to "poor" from "acceptable," two grades higher. But more importantly, the Corolla on the list is the one tested without optional side airbags. Tested with optional front and rear head curtain airbags and optional front seat-mounted torso airbags, the Corolla's side rating is not "poor," but "acceptable"--the second-highest possible score.
