the sad truth? My Wife wants the status symbol, exclusivity.
A couple of years ago we had an '06 Mariner Premier. (loved it) Traded it in when we panicked over some major (yet very short lived) financial struggles. Wish we would have kept it, cause then I wouldn't be asking this question.

"My Wife wants the status symbol, exclusivity"

That is just so sad...
Unlike a man of my advanced age, you kids still have a long time and a lot of things to go though.
IMO
Buying anything for "status symbol, exclusivity" is a game for old men or rich young people. This isn't what an average American should be doing with money if they want to progress to being a comfortably well-off old couple.
That being said...
When I was your age I bought old Cadillacs (not really a status symbol, but had luxury items that did come on new cars I could afford). I worked on them myself and fixed them cheaply. I can't imagine Land Rover product being as easy or cheap to fix as a 1970s Caddy.

Take your time and think this purchase over carefully no matter what you buy.
Good Luck Cody.

I said "the sad truth" because I agree with you..it is a little childish... BUT....I've been shopping and they are the cheapest buy given their mileage/year/capabilities compared to other models in the same segment. Escapes, Jeeps, Rav-4, Equinox, Vue,... the Land Rover always comes out the least expensive. Believe me, I'm trying to do right by my family. That's why I'm asking if buying a cheap vehicle will cost me later.
I'm not buying a new Land Rover. I'm thinking of buying one that's 8 years old. I'm not looking for a status symbol, I'm looking for a cheap reliable 4x4 SUV. The wife just likes the Land Rover because of its residual luxury properties.

I would just look at it like this, there is a reason that something that cost twice what the others did when new is now worth less than they are.
