Not sure about the Golf, but I think the "unpimp" and "fast" marketing ideas are great.

In the 80's before Honda Civic became popular, I used to see these cars (VW Rabbits) EVERYWHERE. Remember the pickup version? I remember working on a few of them... Bosch K-Jetronic Fuel Injection!!

Yeah, that Golf is 2nd best selling car of all times. Volkswagen sold more Golfs than Beetles. Where I'm from majority of people are driving Golf's from the 1980s, they can last forever. Majority of people are driving Golf II.
