If you call you'll get some sad story how owner's family member is sick and he/she needs money right away. Car is currently somewhere in Europe or some other continent, but not in the USA for sure. He/she will ask you to pay for transport up front and if you do (which you shouldn't) you will never hear it from them again.

I figured that would be the case. I also thought it was strange that the vehicle has several records on the carfax, including purchase, from Montana but is being sold in New Jersey.

I don't have $12,000 to blow but if a deal like this were to REALLY to happen I'd sure as hell find a way to have $1200 to blow!

Did you happen to catch the name of the person who you spoke to? I sent an email through auto trader to the guy asking if he was serious and got this as a response:

The email sounds like the typical scam email. If this isn't the actual owner, someone needs to get a hold of the him and have him get in contact with auto trader...

The listing is gone, but the number of the scam ad was 973-598-8522. I hope the law goes after scammers like this.

I sent a message to him too saying I was interested. I got the same message sent to me. I responded and told him I have cash in hand and would like to see it. I haven't heard back yet.

I'm playing his game... Fun for me, waste of time for him. The bogus listing was in New Jersey, but now the car is located is said to be in Montana, which happens to be the same place as the listing that is supposed to be real. Makes me wonder if the real owner is also the scammer?

This is the next message the scammer sent me...

I am located in Great Falls, MT, recently moved due to my divorce.
My final price is $12,699 +$299 transportation, as it will be delivered to your shipping address, by a shipping company.
The transaction will be processed through ebay escrow as I paid them the fees and they provide the most reliable and secure services in which concerns the online sales.
You will pay ebay the required amount, and they will secure it untill you get the Mustang. You will be given a 3-5 days inspection period during which you can decide whether you keep it or not. If you are satisfied with it , you will confirm that to ebay so that they can unblock the funds and send it to me.
Otherwise the transaction is cancelled, you get the refund and I ship the Mustang back.
Here is the four step procedure that we have to follow:
1.You must send me your info : name, address, phone so we can get in touch.
2.You will get an invoice from ebay and there you will be further instructed.
3.You pay ebay the amount, and I contact the shipping company regarding the delivery arrangements so you get the Mustang in maximum 3-4 days.
4.You decide whether you keep the Mustang or not( hopefully you will be positive as you will love it) , if not you will receive a full refund from ebay.
Therefore, if you are determined in buying the GT500 through EBAY, please send me an email with your name, shipping address and phone number.
Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sounds fishy - I'm sure that the eBay invoice will be a phishing attempt.

I'd tell him it just so happens that I am going to be in Great Falls, MT on business later this week so I'll just stay the extra day and stop to see the car.

I tossed this message back at him...

Great Falls? Really? I have family in Helena. That's only about an hour and a half away. I can catch a flight out there for the weekend to make the purchase. This way no 3rd party has to be involved and you get your money right away!! Then I can drive down to see the family! That would be great and they would love to see me.

I'm guessing the response will be that the car is sold?
