I agree with others that the achillies heel of the GTO was the name and the price.

The styling was way too "jelly bean" to be called a GTO. While the look was clean, not unlike the early GTO's, it lacks any real character at all. Had the car had a little more of a boxy, "chiselled" appearance, it would deserve the name.

Hopefully Pontiac can do it right on the second time around, be it called a GTO or a Firebird. They have to differentiate it from the future Camaro. Keep the pontiac version upscale with higher-end options and features that won't be available on the blue-collar Camaro. HID's, NAV, etc.

GM may not make it back with a GTO/Firebird or even Camaro.

As I understand it, the new camero is to be a GTO chasis and power train with a new skin. So if they reintroduce the camero, what use would they have for it? I'm sure pontiac will get a new firebird which will be a rebadged camero with possibly some pontiac styling flair.

Plus wasn't the manaro on the way out anyway?

The car didn't sell so well because it was a bit pricey for the type of people it was marketed to. The GTO name really does conjur up images of a big cool looking car with a beak and chrome trim of yesteryear when what we got was a cleaner looking grand prix looking car. I think they look nice but lack any testosterone in it's styling.

i love f-bodies! i almost bought an 02 trans am ws6 instead of the stang. i love the look of them in black, it is one of the meanest looking cars, with the headlights up or down.

Never cared for that body style myself; but there are lots of people who seem to remember them fondly; go figure.

Ok we have said our goodbyes to the GTO. I think we have made some good points, good car, bland body, no ties to originals, wrong name. great engine and interior. It is always sad to see a performance car be discontinued.

Now more important subject..

Where will this 04-06 Austrailian GTO fit into automotive history??
Will it be a vauluable collector car , another Buich Grand National, or be forgoten and cast aside by future collectors? Do you think anyone will be buying one and holding it for future value? What would a mint or new one be worth 20 years down the road?
My personal opinion, they made too many to be very collectable, good engine, might se some moded out or take the engines out and use in other cars, but I doubt this car will get any more popular as time passes

vyto, where have you been for all this time?

I remember talking to you way back when before everyone had to re-register 2 years ago. All i remember is you getting your firebird and then disappearing till lately?

I cannot say that I am surprised. I am deeply saddened, though. The GTO was a good car. not the best looking, but still good. Well, looks like the Mustang is left to whip on Chargers til '09. and I somehow doubt we'll see the 2010 Camaro, given GM's current state. And, if the GTO returns, we can only pray they get it right..

Well, since the new GTO is supposedly going to share the same platform as the Camaro, maybe we'll see some crossover in terms of styling. Ya know...they could just split up the middle of the Maro's grill and slap a Pontiac emblem over it.

Yup, it ain't dying, it's being reborn. There are some concept sketches here:

http://www.motortrend.com/future/spied/112...08_pontiac_gto/

Unfortunately it is still not returning to its musclecar roots as far as appearances go.

VYTO!!!! havent seen your typing in forever! I still love that cobra you made over two years ago.

That firebird is really awesome ( I would love to see it look like that), but can you make one with the front body-colored instead of chrome?

Yea, that's very old. I remember talking about that here on how ugly it is because it looks like a Mitsubishi Galant.

Therefore, I think the writing was on the wall a long time ago, so its not really that big of a surprise...at least to me.
I think you hit the nail on the head here. That car would have been better off if they introduce it as a new model instead of as a GTO. But there is talk of a new GTO with a square front and devided grill in the future. check nov, R&T.

Well to answer your question, I think the GTO is getting more and more popular again. Even almost 2 years after the last model was released. To answer your question about how mnay being made and so on. The really wasn't that many made. 11,000 were sold in 2005. In the 3 year span, I believe 45,000 were made.

So how rare is the the GTO?

In 2005 Ford made 160,000 Mustangs
In 2005 Nissan imported 30,000 350Z

In 2005 there were only 11,069 GTOs made.

Just think for every 1 GTO made in in 2005 there are 15 Stangs on the road. Hang on to them boys and girls....

And IMO, that is why the GTO will be worth something someday. I rather ride in a Aussie-made Goat then buy a Mustang or Charger and be like the rest of the pack.
