I've wondered if it would happen at some point. I don't really see the point in having a duplicate brand more or less. My GMC was a "little" more upscale than its Chevy counterpart but they could just make the Chevy a little more upscale and call it a day.

GM needs to wield that axe a bit more, too, before putting it down. Their biggest problem is their unwieldy collection of eight brands — Cadillac, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Saturn, Saab, GMC, and Hummer. Each product line has its own dealers, its own development costs, and its own marketing budget, meaning that all those resources are diluted to the point of impotence. If you’re shopping for a midpriced sedan, for example, GM has six. Buick by itself has two. Toyota, by comparison, has just one — the Camry, which sells nearly as many vehicles each year as all six of GM’s offerings combined.

I know it's expensive to kill brands (remember what it cost to get rid of Oldsmobile?) but over the long run, it's probably inevitable anyway.

I have heard Chevy is going to kill its truck and suv line, but surely GMC wouldn't too; some people still want or need suvs and trucks and I doubt GM would allow the entire truck and suv market to go to Ford and Toyota

GMC used to = working trucks.
In GM's usual way they screwed up the brand trying to make it a wanna be luxury SUV brand.
GMC really has no unique products and little reason for existance.
