For a daily drive true, but on the track it's just an excuse for loosing.

How many people do really take their cars to the track? Very few.
Out of those few who do go to the track, how many of them actually buy a Mustang with a V6 engine? Most likely nobody.

And just because the Genesis is slower, and less efficient, does not make the Genesis coupe a Mustang competitor.

I never said they were competitors.
I wrote this on page 1: "I don't think that Genesis is trying to be a "Korean muscle cars" because its not. Genesis 2.0 competes against GTI, Focus ST and similar cars even though it's a RWD. Genesis 3.8 competes again 370Z and similar cars"

Just because one car is slower than the other doesn't mean its not better. Just take a look at Volkswagen Golf GTI. It's one of the slowest cars in its class, yet it's everybody favorite.

I definitely saw a Genesis Coupe mule yesterday here in Detroit with big front and rear covers. I live on a stretch of road near the GM test track in Milford where I only ever see mules from GM so it was surprising to see it in that area.

Actually, I agree with your assessment up to a point. The Genesis 3.8 has the earmarks of being the a value-point player against the 370Z. And I agree that just because a car is slower doesn't mean its not better. After all, 'better' is a very subjective thing.

However, and there is no getting around it, if any manufacturer offers a PERFORMANCE oriented sports coupe, Nissan, Ford, Chevy, or Hyundai, then the performance better be there.

You stated the Genesis coupe is aimed at competing with the Nissan 370Z, a car with a certain built-in level of performance expectations. (And I think you are right--just my opinion, but I think Hyundai did want the Genesis coupe to be perceived as a 370Z alternative.) A car--the Genesis coupe, aimed at competing with a Nissan 370Z, better have enough performance to best a Mustang V6, which is most definitely not a performance oriented machine. (Neither the Mustang V6, or the Genesis coupe offers the performance of the 370Z. To be fair, both are less expensive.)

I don't think the Hyundai Genesis 3.8 is a bad car--however, if Hyundai's aim was to offer a performance coupe in the vein of the 370Z, (or a Mustang GT), the coupe is short of the mark. I think that is why there are a number of comparisons to the Mustang V6. Price-wise and performance-wise, there are a lot more similarities between the Mustang V6 and the Genesis coupe than between the Genesis Coupe and the 370Z.

(PS--the GTI is not everybody's favorite. I wouldn't trade my MS3 for one!)

Genesis Coupe may not be perfect, but I think it's a really good car considering the fact that this is the first RWD Hyundai ever. And its been on the market for only 3 years.

I really like the looks.

I have a friend around me who has nothing but American Muscle cars (Z06 , Mustang GT etc) his whole life and actually bought one of these thinking it was a decent every day driver. He sold it in 6 months. Said it was not even in the same stratosphere as the cars he was used to. I told him this when he got it.

If he didn't like the car during the test drive, why did he buy it?

And ofcourse that Genesis coupe is not the same class as Mustang and Corvette. Genesis coupe is not a muscle car, it's a compact sports car. A really nice one.

Granted it is not bad for a first effort. And I think Hyundai has it in the pipeline to remedy the performance issue. Rumor has it, the 2013 Genesis coupe will have a 333-HP V6. That should put it on equal footing with the 370Z--that is if Nissan (and Chevy and Ford) don't up the ante with their V6 offerings. (There are rumors of a ecoboost V6 making it's way into the Mustang. Remember the Lincoln MKR concept? A FI D35 with 415-HP would be pretty potent tucked under the hood of a Mustang.)

Personally, I don't believe a V8 is in the cards for the Genesis coupe. Rather I think the Kia GT concept indicates the direction that the Genesis coupe will move toward. The Kia GT is powered by a 3.3L V6 with FI. The turbo puts the 3.3L V6 at 390-hp and 394-ft lbs of torque. Since Hyundai owns a chunk of Kia it doesn't take much imagination to see Hyundai transplanting a 3.3L turbo V6 to the Genesis platform. A Genesis coupe with a FI 3.3 at close to 400-hp would have to be considered a serious sports coupe.

Supercharged Hyundai Genesis Coupe in the works

It looks like Hyundai is simply going to stick with its 3.8-liter V6 as the range-topping engine, albeit, with a bit of supercharged force added on. What you are looking at could very well be a Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec that's indeed fitting of its extra nomenclature. The supercharger should help push the standard 3.8-liter output of 306 horsepower (333 hp in the 2012 Genesis sedan) up closer to a figure that will have Mustang GT drivers checking their mirrors.

Cool--I was wrong about the turbo, Hyundai chose to go with a supercharger instead. The boosted V6 should give it performance to go with the looks. It will be interesting to see how far they twist the boost. The GT-R (2012) gets 530-HP from Nissan's 3.8L and rumor has it for 2013 they may up that to 570!

I don't think Hyundai will go over 400 hp.

Agreed, people forget that in the mundane world of the average car, the ability to handle lots of torque and HP while delivering acceptable levels of NVH requires adding that cheap stuff otherwise known as steel to compensate.

Still would be nice though. Something that bugs me about Hyundai, does anybody know what standard they use to rate thier powertrains? Is it J1349?
