G.M. and Chrysler Explore Merger
I think AB's pic says it all:

And yes, MANY people would lose their jobs. Brands would have HUGE changes:
Pontiac-Gone/aborbed into Dodge Cars.
Hummer-gone/Absorbed into Jeep (there is Irony).
Buick-Gone/absorbed into Chrysler.
Saturn-?
GMC-Gone/absorbed into Dodge Trucks.
Mayhem.

Agreed... There is too much redundancy. Things are getting bad. This economic situation had better improve or we are likely to see things we never dreamed of...

Cadillac Imperial. Chrysler Camaro.
Yuck...this is creeping me out. Good thing there's a snowball's chance in hell it will happen.

The only thing worth having of Chrysler's is the Jeep brand... The rest can go the way of AMC...
I can see it now... Another version of GM's Lambda badged as a Dodge or Jeep...

When you're at $4 a share, you had better be looking to cut redundancy. GM should be looking at survival, not how long a particular name has been around. Ford is in the same boat, aside from names, is there really much difference between a Ford or a Lincoln or a Mercury?

I don't like the idea of a merger, but they have to do what they have to do...
According to what I read, GM called Ford first, but Ford stated they can survive on their own. I believe all 3 of these companies will need to somehow put their long standing rivalries aside and find ways to cooperate in order to survive.
As far as the economy is concerned, we certainly have the perfect storm going on for the automotive industry. The dried up credit along with fuel costs and painfully non-fuel efficient product lines from all of the big 3 could quite possibly signify someone's doom. The lack of response with regard to product is undoubtedly going to produce unfriendly fallout. At what point does Ford not have enough staff to actually produce and bring products to market? There are only so many jobs you can cut before a company that size simply cannot function.

The fact of the matter is that Cerberus has 51% ownership of GM and is trying to muscle them into buying Chrysler. GM doesn't really want any part of this.
