Crack Down on Loud Mufflers
has anybody read the article in todays LA Times, on Bikes with loud pipes in section B of the paper? I think that the guy is way over the top.... As the owner of a loud car (gotta love SLP
) soon to be made louder, and an even louder bike, I find his attack on motorcycles to be a bit harsh. I know I am not going to take my pony down to laguna beach anytime soon. :bang:

A low rumble is a great sound.
Idiots with loud pipes on bikes are a big factor in bringing about harsher views by the general public and harsher legislation toward bikers.
Yes, I ride.
Loud pipes risk rights.
I don't know why, but I have a deep seated hatred for harley-esque bikes. Oh wait....I do know why. They sound more obnoxious than...pretty much anything. IMO.
I would rather hear some whining crotchrocket zing through the gears than a monotone "blatblatblatblat".

No kidding, I didn't register for it either though, just went and looked.

I hate to say it, but I'm in the "time to crack down" camp myself. I'm sick of having bikes go by and blast my ears because they only have straight pipes. Write them a ticket the first offense and then impound that noise maker the second! The third offense should involve a crusher.
It's sad, but it's like everything else: Things start out relatively free. Then a few butt wipes say to heck with everyone else and try to be as big a ***** as they can. Then the complaints come in and the laws go on the books. And usually, they start nailing a LOT of other folks that actually weren't being annoying, but they have to set the limit SOMEWHERE (and you can bet, after all the stink, the limit will be a lot lower than you would like!). Stupid people suck.

RRRoamer, I think you say it quite well. Every bit of freedom comes with 2 bits of responsibility. Unfortunately, for the many of us who do enjoy a rich, commanding powerfull exhaust note, they're will be a few dolts, who in some puerile auditory exquisite feeling release of liquid waste product contest, will make their rides loud enough to be heard in the next county.
Quite understandibly and quite reasonbly, people are going to respond negatively to this self-centered lack of judgement and reasonableness and, as mentioned, the line will likely be drawn well back from where most reasonable performance enthusiasts would like.
I can't blame the people who gripe about these ear-piercing vehicles and certainly can't blame the police for having to enforce resultant noise laws and regulations. If you want an ear-splitting exhaust, save it for the strip/track or some other venue away from everyone else.
I do fully blame those who lack the good judgement and reasonable respect and consideration of their neighbors in forcing such a situation on all involved. They're shortsighted actions will only give the real anti-car/bike noise-***** the very in they need to totally legislate all vehicles to a vacuum-cleaner whoosh.

I think some sort of crackdown or ruling is needed. I'm not saying that I don't like the sound of loud pipes, in fact I love the sound. But we have to be somewhat considerate of other people.
For example, how would you feel if you had to listen to exponentially loud fart-can mufflers on econoboxes all day long. It would drive you nuts.
A common ground needs to be reached in order to make both groups satisfied.
