I wouldnt mind a 05 v6, but one of the reasons i want a new car is because I hate having to worry when driving in the snow. Since i found out I'll be stationed somewhere up north when I commission in the AF, i dont want to have to worry about that hassle

I'm supposing its because he either wants or needs 4 doors, since all come in 4 door flavors.
I dont mind a 2 door, but I realized I want a car I can accomdate people comfortabley in. I'm looking at settling down and a mustang doesnt seem like a great family car

I would like a mazdaspeed, but a) gas money B ) need to somehow curb my enthusiasm for speed, or atleast thats what my insurance company keeps telling me c) it costs a bit more than I want to spend. Gotta be able to save enough for a house too

what about a used s60 or s80? the s40 is really small...waay smaller than a mustang...I have rode in an s60 before...very comfortable...and excellent fit & finish
You ain't joking! I sat in a V50 when I was thinking of buying a new car, and it was smaller than my friend's '95 Saturn SC2. My feet couldn't move in the footwell, and my knees touched the wheel.

FYI, I'm 6'2" with long legs, but that's no excuse. I fit in an Audi A3 just fine.

Well, Hondas and Nissans are made in Tennessee and Toyotas are made in Kentucky so I'm not sure what you mean exactly. They build Mazdas in Michigan but that's even more confusing since Mazda is a Japanese company that is controlled by Ford. I assume you mean cars manufactured by a North American company?

You think the money stays in northamerica from these Japanese. cars ??? profits head back to Japan as fast as they make it. that's the problem with Ford and Gm and not to buy mazda, volvo, jaguar etc. They should have let them go like studebaker, amc,. once ford and gm go out of bus. you won't see any cars made in northamerica.

First off, calm down. I wasn't trying to make a point about Japanese cars. I was just trying to clarify what you were saying. Nothing more.

...or a Subaru (non-turbo) - it's AWD, runs on regular grade fuel, and could curb the speeding temptation (maybe). The Volvo S40 is not exactly "cheap", but since you were considering the S40, what about the Mazda 3 station wagon?

Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind, but thanks for asking for input from thid forum. I think you'll be quite happy with the Mazda.

actually, i havent yet. and since i just got into a small fender bender and I am paying for the repainting (instead of going the insurance route) of the other guy's rear bumper on a 2006 bmw 530 ($630 ), i have a little more time to save and think about it.

I'd love an audi A3. anyone have any input on that one?

Audi A3 = Volkswagen Golf in Audi drag. Sorry to sound negative, but I went to check one out. IMO, you pay too much for what you get - especially considering its size. Even at sticker, you could probably stretch for a Mustang GT - at least around here anyway. (And that's not even factoring in the dealer markup). Plus, I think they are turbocharged. Not too sure about the fuel requirement, though it would be nice if it ran on regular grade. Couldn't get a straight answer from the salesman.

You might like to take time to research what Nissan has to offer in your price range. I've found they are very reliable and offer competitive prices. Remember to negotiate negotiate negotiate.

That's an exaggeration. They're on the same platform, yes...but you can't compare the drivetrains or styling/materials. None of the models VW sells offers the same combination of the 2.0L FSI Turbo engine and DSG transmission.

The A3 is at the top of my list of possible cars to own right now. It's a small wagon, slightly larger than the Mazda3 hatch, with a great engine and transmission and a luxurious interior to boot. I'm a big fan of the styling, too.

Yes, it's turbocharged. The fuel grade recommendation by Audi is Premium/91, but at the dealer I went to, they run them on 89 without problems. I'm sure the knock sensor downgrades power, but it's a way to save some money. The mileage for the DSG model is 25/31, which isn't much more than the Mazda3 with a 6-speed manual, and you're getting nearly 50 more hp and lb-ft of torque.

I test drove it and loved the way it rode and handled, and the engine was easy to handle in traffic. I had doubts about the shift quality of the DSG when taking it easy, but it wasn't any more odd than the Honda CRV or Nissan Altima 2.5S I've drven lately. It's a very quite and comfortable car, too. I'm oddly proportioned (6'2" with long legs), and like what I said about the Volvo V50, some cars don't work for me. But I fit in the Audi fine.

I like to think of it as a more refined and upmarket Mazda3 hatch. Similar body styles and ideas, but different executions - the Audi is a noticeable step up in technology, refinement, and material quality.

hi5.0, I don't think you checked one out as much as you say, or you'd know a little more about the car. Both the engine and DSG tranny are somewhat revolutionary, and it's the first combination of the two sold in the US.

pilot1129, I'd check out the Altima if you haven't yet. I rented one earlier this summer, and put 900 miles on it in a few days - it's the most comfortable car I've ever driven, bar none. I was in a 2.5S model with an auto, and I found it to be perfectly quick in traffic and on the interstate. It had an option package that included alloy wheels and a power driver's seat - well worth the money. If I were you I'd definately give them a look.

Before I bought my Mazda6, I test drove all the cars on my short list (Accord, Camry, Altima, and 6). I quickly narrowed it down to the Altima and 6. The Altima definitely had the advantage in the engine department, but it came down to handling and overall driving experience. Whereas the 6 felt razor sharp, the Altima just felt ponderous and heavy by comparison (the excessive torque steer didn't help either). While the Altima is a nice car, I chose the 6 and never regretted it.

I would suggest a Subaru Legacy.

I own a 2000 Legacy and it is a great car. Gets very good mpg. Has AWD and does beautifully in the snow. 4 doors and very sporty looks.

The 2005 Legacy's are very sexy looking to in my opionion.
