DETROIT — Good news for bow-tie fans: The Chevrolet Camaro concept recently unveiled at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show is "extremely close" to the proposed production version that is close to winning the green light from GM brass.
The bad news: The program won't see the light of day until model-year 2010, according to informed sources in the supplier community.
GM designers and engineers continue to finesse details on the future Camaro and companion models, including a proposed rear-drive replacement for the Chevy Impala sedan, said to be inspired by the classic 1965-'67 Impala series.
Suppliers expect the corporate 3.9-liter V6 to be the base engine in both the 2010 Camaro and Impala, as well as proposed rear-drive sedans for Buick and Pontiac that are tentatively slated for model-year 2011. An optional 5.3-liter V8 would be offered in all models, and a six-speed automatic would be the standard transmission across the board, according to vendors who are familiar with the program.
The '10 Camaro also will likely offer the big-bore 6.0-liter small-block V8 as its top power plant, with the 7.0-liter engine apparently being reserved exclusively for the Corvette.
What this means to you: Will the red-hot Camaro concept still look as cool in another three-plus years as it does today? That's the risk GM is betting on.
Boy, I really like the new Camaro concept (one of the few here that does), but does anybody else see a whole raft full of problems with this strategy...? I mean, GM is dangerously close to bankruptcy...maybe within 24 months.

2010? Jeez, you'd think they could pull that date in a little. A lot can happen between now and then. GM has learned nothing IMO. They have been behind the curve as far as new designs go, but they were on the money with this, but it will be old by the time it hits the streets.
BTW, I love the new Camaro as well.

Very true. I have no idea what they are thinking either. Once again they have put themselves behind the eight ball. 2010 gives a lot of time for them to say "well we messed up even more, sorry folks, no Camaro."

Another Source says it's been pushed ahead from 09 to 08.....
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Chevy officials at the Chicago Auto Show didn't confirm any new details on the much-rumored "Blue Devil" Corvette, but they didn't downplay it, either, reports AutoWeek. "We'd love to have it," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. In recent months, rumors have intensified regarding the new range-topping Vette, which is said to have a supercharged version of the Z06 engine with output around 600 horsepower. AutoWeek also says there's a rumor — possibly from the same sources — suggesting produciton of the Chevrolet Camaro Concept has been moved forward, from 2009 to 2008! We'll keep you posted as these hot stories develop…
With the Mustang having its refresh in '09, that would make the Camaro very much late to the party IMO

Good point.

2010 sounds a lot more realistic then 08. I dislike the concept though, very 1990 design-school-studyish... I say they redo with more thought and go from there. The concept looks very rushed to get some media, people 'like' anything new like that on a quick impression without really looking at it, especially abandoned Camaro fans. Ford will of mastered the S197 by 2010, while Chevy is starting its first production year.

If they truly are bound for bankruptcy within the next two years, it really doesn't matter when the new Camaro comes. This isn't the car that will save GM, even if it hit the market this year.

nobody yet commented on a retro impala? come on guys- even if a bowtie car I think this is great!
thats best news Ive heard in a long time- those big fastback impalas were sharp. Hope ford ditches the 'tri bar grille on everything except the mustang' idea, and brings back something akin to a 70 torino or aussie XBgt falcon...hope the economy holds for a lot of reasons, but I just might be eager to go car shoppin if they start putting some corners back on the cars...I'm soo friggin tired of seeing round roofed 4 door sedans and being told theyre stylish/agressive/bold/whatever...call em what ya want- theyre all fugly to me.
I dont love the nose on the camaro, but its not that bad- overall best looking camaro since 69...if theyd flatten the nose a tad and give more height/depth to the grille, might be best looking camaro ever. Like it or not, its gunnin for mustang sales- and it should be quite a car too...even if 5 years of catchup required. I hope it does materialize, and they price it 'right'(mustang realm). I wont buy one, but competition is good- it should keep FoMoCo on their toes too- we all win. I will be needing a new family car though too- I hope Ford is looking at a retro fullsize cruiser too- or I may end up with one of those impalas if it looks good(dont worry- my mustangs aint going anywhere...still got 5 fords, no plans on getting rid of any). I love the old 69 galaxie lines, but think its too much of a fringe vehicle...just about everyone would like the torino fastback lines to return.

The Impala is long overdue for a remodel. I cant stand the junk they are labeling "Impala" . Imo, the last real Impala was the RWD SS from the mid 90's.

Ita may have been redesigned in 06', but it needs to be RWD, not FWD. Also, it looks as bad as it did before.

But it does have 303 hp engine. That's big improvement.

Impala needs to demonstrate the same level of design inspiration as the Camaro. It does seem that all of the US automakers are looking to the past for design inspiration right now, though - and we have the Stang to thank for that! I, for one, am all for it, though. It might help to kick start consumers' passions for American cars again. If they can match great designs with state-of-the-art build quality and reliability, then there's still a chance. My big worry is that it's already too late.
I mean, 2010 for a new Camaro? I love the car, but telling us the Camaro will be ready in 2010 is like the Chief Steward of the Titanic coming on deck after the ship has hit the iceberg and telling everyone that breakfast will be served at 8:00 am the next morning.

That's funny and sad at the same time. You lead GM lovers all over the US drooling, then you slap 'em in the face with a 4-5 yrs waiting time.
I liked the concept....this is bad news for muscle car and Chevy fans.

There was a guy heckling the anouncer at the NY auto show for GM dragging their feet on producing the car and he was mad. I thought they were going to throw him out. I had an 86 Z28 350, 88 Z28 305, and still have a 91 RS 305 with the Z28 wheels that were an option. If only I had kept the red 88. The 86 was total and rebuilt.
