At the bottom of the link says it all.

Smart move if they want to beat the 09 Mustang.

Wow.
As for the Camaro thing, if they think they can get it out that quickly, the must have all the plans in place before they showed the car. I would love to see a pre-production version early next year. Imagine, Concet 01/06, pre-pro 01/07, sales 11/07. That is what I call fast-tracking.

Well, Pontiac did get the Solstice out rather quickly, and that included designing a whole new and rather sophisticated platform (no McPherson struts, ox-cart axle suspension here), all starting at $20K.
Presuming the Camaro will be done on an upcoming Zeta(?) platform, perhaps it may be out in time for '08. That would certainly take the wind out of the '09 Stang's sails quite a bit unless Ford gets serious and does more than the typical mid-cycle skin deep freshening. If the concept specs are any indication, and possibly those spy pics of the chassis renderings, the Camaro looks to out-spec the Stang, at least on paper (proper actual execution being critical here).
If they do pull it off, well, I would be very impressed. GM does have some islands of competence in their vast swamp of ineptitude.

If they do, they will definitely hurt Mustang sales.

History has a strange way of repeating itself..the Camaro could never outsell the Mustang in the past, I seriously doubt it will now. It may take a few buyers away(depending on price), but I predict the Camaro will be pushing up daisies once again, while the Mustang soldiers on. We'll see of course, but I am confident in the Mustang, as I always have been.

I agree with you. the Camaro will never outsell the Mustang, I never said it was. What I meant is that the Camaro will take way more sales from the Mustang If GM starts to sell them one year earlier. Many people want this car, but the market of Mustang buyers is and will always be bigger.

It will be a GTO with new sheet metal. It shares the same platform and engine. I would imagine the price will be quite similar also. If that Challenger comes out around the same time for about the same money, I bet the Camero will not be that hot a seller for $36 grand or so.

They have no money for a platform, so most likely a decontented GTO/Holden platform. GM execution has been pretty terrible over the last few years, I don't think they will develop a car that you can feel the 'soul' of the designers were in it like the stang does. The concept is completely directionless, I hope they start all over with it, it took 6 years to develop the the S197, so good luck in 2 GM.

From late 1970s until mid 1980s Camaro did outsold Mustang often.

Don't know if thats fact or not, but I wouldn't be supprised, the firebirds/cameros looked FAR better than the Mustang in those years.

That's what Standard Catalog of American cars 1976-2002 said.
