CA Personalized plates - having them before the car arrives

Guys and gals-

My "12 BOSS" plates arrived at the local CA DMV office but the lady there doesn't want to give them to me before I take possession of the car. What's my sequence of events from here? I emailed the dealership guy asking him not to order new plates for it. Anything else?

Thanks!

Andy

Seems to me that until you have verifiable proof the car is yours, so they can match the car to the license plate in their system, you're kind of stuck waiting for the car.

The dealer should give you a temp tag to drive around though. That should be good enough to get you to the DMV and make the exchange within a month. Don't worry, it'll be fine.

I'd call their office, the title clerks there, and explicitly tell them NOT to order license plates for your car though. The sales guy is one thing, but they are the ones doing it... if he/she didn't tell the title clerks or put it in the deal folder to not have the license... you'll get the plate. And be charged for the L in TT&L. Which you shouldn't do, if you already have plates ready, just waitin' for your temp tags.

I ordered my plates and they arrived before the car. The DMV will not give you the plates until you take your registration in. Just tell the dealer when you get the car that you have personalized plates waiting at the DMV.

And make sure the DMV doesn't send them back! If they go unclaimed for a certain amount of time they get sent back and you have to start over.

Since you already went in though I doubt you'll have that problem

Thanks guys. The DMV said they'd hold the plates for at least a couple months. I should get the car within a month. I'll talk to the clerk at the dealership just to be safe.
