A hybrid diesel would probably adress the smell issue too. I mean, the cars you smell are the ones that are stopped at a light, driving slow in traffic or just idling, which is when the hybrid would shut off the engine.
Hey Matt... JYNX you can't talk untill i say your name three times!
okay tell me i'm not the only who did that in grade school and who understands what i just said...

I guess I should have titled the original post better. When I posted it I meant in regards to diesels being another option to someone who wants a more ecologically friendly vehicle if they weren't interested in a gasoline hybrid, not as a competitor.
As many of you know, Ford has already announced they will increase the number of Hybrid models ten fold from what they have now.

dude, THAT sickens ME... you're gonna sicken yourself if you stick your nose in your trucks tail pipe dude. DON'T DO IT MAN!!
okay, ya about the diesel vs hybrid thing... for sure at this point, for the consumer, it definitely is diesel vs hybrid if you're looking for high mileage so i don't think the title of your thread is necessarily off. In terms of saving money, diesel's might be the way to go, though at this point our diesel fuel sucks, so if you care about smog and respiratory problems, stick with a hybrid. I'm just annoyed when you hear some CEO saying "we think diesels are the way to go, so we're doing poo all to develope hybrid cars." As much as i like those french cars, they're definitely the culprits in this situation, though i think the dude from Nissan also said the same thing, though they are giving a half-assed attempt by sticking toyota's stuff in their altima.

Interesting point, Jeff. I just got a beater 1988 Escort wagon about a week and a half ago. On the 577 mile drive from San Diego to here it got 35 mpg and all it cost was the expense to fly to SD and drive back, so I'm not in the market for either a diesel or a hybrid. I hate the idea of plunking down over $20k just to save a few bucks every month on gas. I doubt that I spend more than 20 bucks a month these days on gas. I just drive or walk the 1.5 miles to work depending on the weather. Since everything I need is so close, walking is a very viable alternative to everything.

Hey, no problem. You have to understand I work where we have to fix these vehicles, I have seen many things that make me scratch my head. (both design and what owners do to these vehicles.) Most people who have them really have no need to own them. Ah. but that is their choice.
I am and will always be a car guy, no trucks, no minivans and no SUV's. The wife is expecting in April and it looks like a Fusion, 500 or Freestyle is in our future!
BTW, I have alwys been keen on the smell of Jet Exhaust.
Oh and the 6.0 PS is a runnin' engine! Even though it has an "odor" ^_^

Dude, that's awesome... that's one of the biggest problems with our part of the world nowadays. Hardly anybody lives anywhere near where they work. Could you imagine what it would be like if everybody could walk to work? But thanks to zoning laws and all that, there's no way you can have businesses in residential areas, we like to segregate everything into sections, so that now, most people hop in their car to go get a jug of milk or a six pack. My girlfriend is studying architecture, and i also read a lot by one of her profs who writes for our newspaper in montreal. A lot of architects and urban planners really promote the idea of city homes that have space for a small business on the ground floor, which is pretty much how things used to be in cities. Paris is pretty much all like that. But i suppose nowadays, not everybody can work in a small business. I dunno if I could fit a car assembly line on my groundfloor....
Sorry... back on topic:
Ya Lalo, at this point, while diesel is more fuel efficient, it pollutes more in north america. Makes nasty smog, but that's only cause the quality of the fuel that the fuel companies put out is pretty crappy, high sulfur content. Next summer, new regulations come into effect that'll force them to improve the fuel, making diesel a much more environmentally friendly alternative as it is in europe right now.
