It depends on the year. Without looking it up I think they put 429's in the '69 to about '73 Torinos. '72 and '73s are going to be dog slow(lower compression, emissions) while the '69-'71s should be pretty decent. It's still a heavy car but I had a 429 in a '69 Tbird and it held it's own. Those 429s were sweet motors. They were a big block built on a small block design. It's like they took the 289 and expanded it and slapped Cleveland style heads on it. Those oval intake ports were awesome!

They were easy to get a big boost in hp with very little work. A set of headers, an intake and big carb would make it a screamer.

I think that 429 in Torino was introduced in 1970. 375 hp, 450 lb-ft torque. 0-60 in 6 sec, 1/4 mile in 13.9 sec @ 101 mph.

 

Those are pretty respectible numbers.

 

We had a '71 Thunderbird with a 429 and as heavy as that car was, it was still really fast.

 

You're right about the 429 not being available in the Torino until 1970. The engine was introduced in 1969 and was available in other cars but not the Torino.

As far as hp ratings it would depend on which 429 it is. They came in 3 varieties - the base ThunderJet 429, 429 CobraJet and 429 Super CobraJet:

429 4bbl 360hp@4600 480lb-ft@2800 10.5:1
429CJ 4bbl 370hp@5400 450lb-ft@3400 11.3:1
429SCJ 4bbl 375hp@5600 450lb-ft@3400 11.3:1

I think some of those ratings were conservative.

429s where nice...and Easy to mod.

Apperently they had a flaw in the heads...A little hump that if it was removed, make the engine capable of 600HP pretty easy. I had someone show me exactly how to build a 600HP 429 or 460 using the 429 heads. I could do it for $1500.

 

Of course it is, it's Ford...

 

ive ben looking at torinos lately, they got them on ebay for cheap that could be restored.

 

If you can find one that isn't rusted then you should go for it. Restoration parts are probably not as common as they are for Mustangs though. Another alternative is the Mercury Montego/Cyclone. Some of those came with 429's also. I used to have a '70 Cyclone Spoiler that had a 429SCJ, 4-speed and shaker hood scoop. Someone posted some pics yesterday in one of the other threads of a car show they went to. There was a Cyclone Spoiler in one picture that was almost exactly like the one I had. I never should have gotten rid of that car. :cry:

One other alternative is the Mercury Cougars. The 67-73 models are basically a Mustang with a different skin. They are under-rated as collector's and performance cars. They had all the same engine options as the Mustang: 6-cyl, 289, 302, 351, 400, 428, 429, even Boss 302 and one or two Boss 429s. They had a special model called the Eliminator which was similar to Mustang's Mach 1.
