370Z 3000 lbs 350 HP
I agree, the pony cars when they arrived were much smaller than their modern day counterparts. They need to go back to that formula. Fox body size or smaller. That would make it much easier to achieve upcomming fuel concerns.
Uh, you all know that comparing the Z to the Mustang in terms of size and weight is like comparing apples vs oranges? Remember, the Z is a 2 seater, and a smaller car at that, so it should weigh less. Plus, you can't even get a couple sets of normal suitcases (or 2 sets of golf clubs) in the Z with that rear suspension brace! So this doesn't suprise me in the least that they made the car lighter.

While I wouldn't expect the '14(?) Stang to be sized with the 2-seat 370Z, I too think it does need to be siginificantly downsized and more importantly, spend a few weeks at the fat farm. Gas is not likely to get cheaper - will probably get even more expensive actually, CAFE ain't going away and the air ain't gonna clean itself up.
I think the next couple of years will be somewhat similar to the early '70s. Hopefully, this time, in stead of coming up with a dreadful Mustang II sled, Ford will act aggressively to meet these challenges head on rather than reactively, as then.
There's no reason a 2+2 sport coupe should weigh more than 3200 lbs max, for which 375-400hp would be more than sufficient - the 4,000lb 500+hp GT500 is just ridiculous. Couple that with a lightening fast 6 to 8 speed DSG-type tranny make the most of the power and a fully modern suspension to far better utilize and maintain the speed generated down any road in far greater safety and comfort than today.
Yes, such pony cars would be different, of necessity, than today's hulking, overpowered blunderbusses, but they could and should be as quick, even more exciting, and more involving yet clean and efficient performance cars rather than the dray pig the Mustang II was.

But the point I'm trying to make, is that the cars are going to be heavier, and all the safety items (and options we all like to have) are the culpurate. To be honest, 3,200 lbs for a 2+2 isn't realistic for a normally priced car, like a Mustang. Heck, the 599 Ferrari weighs almost 3,800 lbs and its aluminum and carbon fiber!

it doesnt look too bad
yeah, weight is not going to be easy to deal away with the safety stuff, older cars could be lighter weight because they didnt have airbags, abs, computer driver assists, power steering, etc

I like the current one a lot better. Is that picture the actual car or is it just a rendering? The decrease in weight is certainly a nice move......but at that price, I'd take the G37 any day of the week. At least that car looks nice, and its got a back seat you can use.
ps.....lowblustang00, your car looks awesome, I love that color. Only color I'd choose over electric green

My worry is that, if weight doesn't come down, then performance inevitably will. I think the age of ever bigger, more powerful motors to heave ever fatter, more ponderous cars down the road are soon coming to an end. Newer engine technologies will give some respite, but inevitably, with CAFE, OPEC, EPA and whatnot, if weight doesn't budge downwards, then, like the '70's, performance will.
