Now, why couldn't Ford save Mercury the same way GM saved Buick?

They saved Mercury the same way as Pontiac and Oldsmobile were saved.
That aside, I'm not impressed by the car or Buicks in general.
And that is from a former Buick owner.

Buick is like the most popular import car in China and their population is just getting into the whole car ownership thing, so there's one of the reasons that GM did it.

I know the Chinese market is the only reason why Buick survived, but GM did hell of a job on the home market too. Month after month Buick is having a huge increase in sales and with what? Cars based on Opels? We all know Ford is killing Opel in the Europe and they can build better vehicles than Opel.

For around $35k I'd sooner have a BMW 328i sedan or a Cadillac CTS sedan. It looks nice, but not $35k nice. At least it is available with a manual transmission, that's getting rarer and rarer these days (but is still a must for me).

way to steal the new ford LED dimples from Fiesta and Edge.

i dont know... a 3700# turbo 4? AND $35,000 for it? sounds like a hard sell for a performance buyer with that kind of money to spend when they could just get....a used G8 if they wanted to stay GM

The silhouette is similar to a Mazda 6.

Really like it, very sharp and sophisticated, both in styling and engineering. Certainly a Buick far more in tune with today's and tomorrow's needs and demands than the old man cars they've often purveyed.

$30+K right sized, turbo-four near luxury cars aren't necessarily the oxymoron reflexive measure them by the quantitative pound/foot/hp gauge often taken by American domestic buyers. I think this car has real possibilities for making inroads into the more sophisticated and flush yuppie buyers who often reflexively go for imports, often European. I think this car commands a serious looksy on their part. Of course, no coincidence here as this is basically a reskinned Opal Insignia.

Now what would really put this car on the map with both traditional import or domestic luxury car buyers would be to bring over the Insignia OPC as a latter day GNX.

I agree about the GNX. Buick has a lot of work to do to build it's brand image enough to successfully compete for the buyers who's first intinct is to look at the German imports.

That's the first car the General has put out in many, many years that might make me visit one of their dealerships again. Although, a 4 cylinder would be a huge stretch for me. I understand a V6 will be available later on.

In Europe Opel Insignia (which is the same car) is available with a 2.8L V6 engine (256 hp). The same engine is also available with a turbo (320 hp) in Insignia OPC.

And those cars Ford is killing Opel with will soon be the same cars they'll be killing the competition with here. The "Make Merc into Ford's Buick" idea was always the worst of the possible choices, that plan only works if the original Ford brand product isn't measuring up to their potential.
