2008 cobalt SS
GM has confirmed the launch of a turbocharged version of the Chevrolet Cobalt will take place at this week’s SEMA Auto Show in Las Vegas. The new car will pick up ‘SS’ badging as well as the 2.0L direct-injection and turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Red Line models. Official output figures stand at 260hp and 352Nm (260lb-ft) of torque and this same engine will eventually make its way into the forthcoming Chevy HHR SS as well.

wow... big news for chevy. i had an ion redline before the stang. i really liked the car a lot. i had the 2.0 ecotec in mine, although it was eaton supercharged, they were talking for quite some time about them developing a turbocharged version. i wonder if they will come out with another saturn platform other than the sky to put it into.

The new Cobalt SS is 13 seconds faster round the ring than the previous car, IIRC it pulled an 8:22 or 8:23
GM is putting thier butt in gear, I beleive the same engine is going in the HHR SS and it has a top speed of 155 and Lutz was talking about the idea behind the SS concept, it isn't just a watered down appearence package (like the Shelby Gt, GT/CS and Bullitt), these are cars that are going to get some serious upgrades in handling, braking and power, also I understand that the SS pacakge is going to be applied across the line like the SRT cars.
I wish Ford would get thier crap together, You have the SRT cars from Chysler and now the SS cars from Chevy, and we got the ..... cars from Ford and if this isn't a smack in the face, Ford invented the domestic market for this with SVT.

I'd love to see a Focus competitor to this. I liked the way the SVT Focus looked when it first came out. On a GM note hopefully they will have a factory upgrade for the turbo cobalt as they did for the supercharged one. The stage 2 cobalt was like 240 straight from GM. Finally a real competitor to the "skittle". Doesn't Ford already have a euro spec Focus that would fit right in this segment? And here is the HHR SS.

Personally I think it would be a little crowded in that segment with the HHR and Cobalt but oh well. I wanna see some Caliber/HHR SS head to head they both are funny looking quasi SUV FWD's with decent HP for their size.

Needs to be more Astony
They should have done turbo from the start, the SRT4 neon blew the doors off the Cobalt SS , and the cobalt came after the srt4 so you'd think they would have come prepared.
I wish the focus would get in the game.
The cobalt with this 260hp will certainly run 13's. The Neon SRT4 with 230hp ran high 13's.

As clunky as the Caliber is I would expect it to be slower. I don't know what GM was thinking with the S/C on the Cobalt myself. Should have saved it and slapped it on a V8 earlier.

Ford needs other performance cars besides the Mustangs..
The people who used to buy SVT's are quickly running to other brands due to ford's neglect, they should have a SVT Fusion, Focus, and Lightning.
