Design hasn't changed much, refinement has though. Looks ok, nothing entirely exciting.

I like it. It retains a lot of the Jeep heritage yet is modern. Gotta see one in person first though.

I will bet that new Rubicon is one unstoppable SOB. I would not doubt "most offroad capable (mass produced) vehicle in the world." Judging by my experience with past Wranglers, if this thing really is improved, it would leave an H3/H2 for dead on the trails.

Could you elaborate? If a Jeep isn't the most capable off road vehicle, what is?

It may be ONE of the most capable publicly sold vehicles, but by not means is it THE most capable off road vechicle in the world. Does the Army use Jeeps when they need vehicles for their troops, no. Do Jeeps out perform other vehicles in off road competitions (sure they do sometimes, but not all of the time), no. If I had unlimited resources and I wanted a capable off road vehicle, would it be a Jeep, maybe, but probally no. You?

And my bet is that you are some Jeep afficanato and typing all of this is useless, so go ahead and do your bashing/flashing thing.

Yeah, Jeep's statement was a little disengenuous, but I think they sort of assumed people would be smart enough to realize they werent claiming to better purpose built off-road rigs.

And was this Jeep available eight years ago when the DOD was looking for a troop mover? 'Fraid not, it actually just came out...

Also, one may note, H1s are considerably more expensive than the Rubicon.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is the Most Capable off road vehicle produced today. Now, 1 off custom buggies will leave a Jeep, or any other vehicle in the dust, no doubt. H1's are too wide to fit on most trails, and suffer from IFS/IRS.

The new Wrangler (TK) is pretty sweet. I hate that the 4.0L is gone, and they've slapped in a minivan V6. The 4.0L had almost all of it's torque at idle. I can't wait until the put the CRD in it. Overall it's pretty nice. I want to check one out in person.

I used to own a 2004 Wrangler Rubicon until it was wrecked and then I ordered my 06 GT. In stock trim, I ran circles around all but the most extreme Jeeps.

And for a production vehicle, it is the most capable. Land Rover has gone soft, H2's and H3's are a joke off-road. Every SUV on the market has turned into a bloated car to please the soccer moms.

I wouldn't say that Land Rover has gone soft. They were always about being luxurious and off road capable. I am not sure how that's changed.

yeah the CRD will be awesome. It could have been a bigger jump from the previous model, but I stil llike it. The video of it is good.

I should "American" Land Rover has gone soft. The Range Rover and LR3 are both super luxuries, but neither will handle more than a gravel road off road. Take a look at the LR3's new IFS/IRS. Try draggning that through the jungles. The old Disco Series I and II were beasts in the jungle. That's why they had the Camel Trophy editions. I wish they would crash certify some new D90's and bring them back over.

They use the new LR3's in the exact same way they used the old Disco's on the "Around the World" drives. To say it can only handle a gravel road is, well no offense, stupid.

Have you read a single article on the Range Rover or LR3 published in the last 3 years? (I would suggest driving one, but I don't have the means, I am not sure if you do) Everybody loves them because not only are they still just as capable, but now they have a respectable interior too.

Edited:

I added the Top Gear Review (I don't know anybody harder on a car than them, and while it isn't perfect, I don't see how it's "soft"/ a good example of what it got stuck in is very evident when they get the wheels moving the second time towards the end of the video, and I can't see, at the depth the wheel is sunk, how a different offroad vehicle would do better [save the Wrangler or Hummer, both with massive tread]) for you:

I agree Jim, the LR3's are amazingly capable . Their suspension systems are some of the most sophisticated (off road wise) in the world. I don't think they've gone "soft" at all but rather have become more sophisticated.

The most capable production (as in available to the general public) off road vehicle in the world in my opinion is the Bowler Wildcat which ironically uses Rover engines

Had a '97 Wrangler Sport with all the bells and whistles. I loved it, but had to sell it when I moved to South Africa and couldn't import a left hand drive car. What a pity, it would have been great there, a country with lots of fantastic off roading opportunities. I ended up with a lousy Land Rover Freelander -- what a piece of junk that was! I still miss the Wrangler....

Ha, what did you expect? Event he most dramatic Wrangler "redesigns" tend to be 'evolutionary' at best.
