Dropping cats

Hey guys.
What are the pros and con in dropping the cats and replacing with off road pipes?
I know its loud , but will it be loud enough for cops to check?

my advise to you...... Lay off the gas when you see a cop. It is louddddd, you gain hp and if you have no emissions where you live go for it. I wouldn't have it any other way....

Are you going H or X. There are differences in the types of sound that you will get from both.

I just put in my O/R H today and all I can say is W W! The car sounds friggin awesome. I have the flowmaster american thunder and they sound so much better now. Don't worry about drone or trumpeting. Mine sounds just like it did before the O/R H at crusing speeds. I give this mod 2 thumbs way up. Get the Pypes O/R H from Brenspeed.

From ontario highway traffic act:

Every motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and excessive smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, straight exhaust, gutted muffler, hollywood muffler, by-pass or similar device upon a motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 75 (1).

I don't see anything about cats, but they can give you something like "excessive noise" or some BS like that if your not careful.

From personal experience:
1) they are LOUD. sounds good, but be prepared to cruise in your neighborhood in 4th and be wary of early morning start ups
2) they STINK. absolutely nasty, esp in stop and go traffic when the fumes come back at you.
3) they are totally illegal. I have seen with my own eyes Ministry of the Environment patrol cars travelling with Cops on Friday and Saturday nights to local hangouts to check people's cars with sensors and machines. Even if you weld dumps in, they can check the temperature and the fumes and will bust you.

These days the cops are smart and they can tell...it's your risk. They are a cool mod, but my decisions are made for what I'll do: high flow cats.

The environmental cops are really cracking down on those kinds of mods in Ontario.

The fine is pretty steep too, never mind if they find any other modifications and let your insurance company know about them.

I plan on getting an x-pipe with highflow cats once the money situation gets better. Even so, I've heard plenty of stories where guys still got fined because the xpipe wasn't an "exact factory replacement" despite passing an emission test.

Honestly, they should be going after all the beat up Caravans, Intrepids and Toyota Cressidas belching nothing but burnt oil. All these cars seem to have newly issued licence plates as well

So simon... my vote is to play it safe and get a catted x-pipe or h-pipe. Besides, there are plenty of threads in the performance section which talk about a horrible "crop duster" sound with an o/r pipe.

Simon... 1 word....

'DUMPS'

It might not be as loud as 'sans cats'... but at least you can quiet it down if you want....

Seems like Si is all feeling little now that he has the quietest exhaust in the 'bunch'
hahaha

honestly dude, maybe 10 years ago you could have gotten away with them, but even as of like '98, '99 I saw them checking people's cars, ones that had dumps welded in, and they can tell.

it's like the front plate (but worse consequences) - if it's worth the money/risk to you, then go for it.

Didn't think dumps were illegal as long as when they were on the street they were going through the system. Or does it HAVE to be a closed system?

I remember some guys with 04s having dumps pre muffler with a valve...some were even electronic. So at the track they would run the dump... and on the street through the full system. Cool idea.

Wow, I lived in Florida, and in a major city no less, when I was younger but I have lived in Kentucky so long now that I just cannot relate to the above. Example? I bought my first real car after having been in KY about a year, a 73 Mach-1 with a very, very nasty 351 Cleveland under the hood, and drove it home running the exhaust through a set of long tube headers and nothing else...nada. Loud is not an appropriate description of what that car was before I put the Flowmasters on.

On the way home I pulled up next to a city cop at the last stoplight on the way to my house. My thoughts? No way am I going to get away with this. What do I get? A smile and a nod.....no kidding. In Kentucky they seem pleased if you car even has an exhaust and could care less about cats...however good or bad you may view that.

No doubt I'll get some ribbing about being in Kentucky and the strange young men who play banjos by the river (and think that Ned Beaty has a nice mouth) that everyone assumes live near here. Be that as it may you would be surprised at how many seriously well done and nasty rides there are around here, and how little guff you get for the same from the local constabulary.

To me, sounds like you could get away with it if they were clsoed on the street. Its something that I want to do.

What about saying that you just bought the car, used off the lot and it was modified that way and that you didn't know?
