Where are all the old Mustangs?

We went to the Manes and Planes show in Oshkosh, WI this weekend and had a great time. A couple observations - Our new body style was well represented and out in force. Very few Fox bodies - did any 82, 83 or 85 Mustangs survive?
Even more amazing, there were few early Mustangs, especially in the stock class. I remember going to Mustang shows in the 80's and if you didn't have an early Stang, you weren't really welcome.

They need to bring some vendors in to the show. Only had a couple there. I did get a Ford Showroom Bullitt Poster and a hat.

I wonder about that too - I remember the same thing at the car shows in the 80's. I would guess that the S197's will leave a mark for a long time.

Whenever I go to a show, I bring my '05 and my '67. The classics are are a minority in most of the shows I attend. Try finding a '74 to '78.

There were no Mustang II's to vote for in the 74-78 class.

I saw an 84 Fox body at the local show and shine on the 28 June. Most of the Mustangs at the show and shine were S197 models and 1994-2004 models with the occasional sprinkling of 1964-1973. It would seem that the smaller mustangs have all but vanished.

A lot of the fox's have been run into the ground, crashed, or turned into track-only vehicles. Figure even the newest are 15 years old, and it is not the norm to being restoring fox's like classics are.

Why not a lot of classics? Well, again its been a longtime and overall numbers are low, there are a lot of "projects" that have been sitting in someones garage/barn/backyard for the past 20years. Of those drivable, some have been so nicely restored/resto-modded that the owners are afraid to drive them on the street so they sit un-used in the garage.

Go to any local drag strip and as Shotokan mentioned you will see plenty of Foxes. Where I live there is a nice even dispersion between model years . . . even older ones. However, there are those that race and those that show and sometimes never the two shall meet.

There's a 65 in our garage. I don't have the funds to make her show worthy! I still love her though.

Manes and Planes Car Show

The show I attended is held annually around the end of June/ July 4th. The show is held at the Pioneer Airport grounds of the EAA Air Museum in Oshkosh, WI. The theme of the show is Mustangs of the P-51 and Ford varieties. The entry fee is 20 dollars, and for an additional 5 dollars, you get a professional photo shoot with the P-51 "Paul II." They e-mail you the picture within a couple of days. I had mine on Monday. During the afternoon, they do a P-51 fly by. This year they had 2 planes. You also get free access to the museum.

It's a really good time and there were lots of nice cars, including a Foyt Coyote Mustang, which I didn't know existed till I got home. Mustang Enthusiast Magazine is one of the show sponsors as well.

Well, one of the old ones is sleeping in my garage, but there is a new one resting peacefully next to it as well. Haven't participated in any shows in a long time (or even spectated). Maybe I should start visiting some if there aren't many showing up for people to admire. I'd hate to deprive a young future Mustang driver of experiencing the heritage of the breed.

Now that's what a garage should contain

I actually ended up with an 06 after getting sick of looking for a 69/70 sportsroof for 3+ years. Someday I will have one.

down here in florida we have a mustang/mustang show at fantasy of flight. kermit weeks (the museum owner), and the local mustang club have put it on for the last 11 or so years. it's really a good show.
you should go to the regional threads on this forum and start searching there.

Whenever I go the amount of early stangs matches or exceeds that of the S197.

Everything else though is in limited numbers

My 65 is stripped and sitting on its side on the rotisserie. I am ready to move on as soon as I get some extra money.

I'm one of the few who still has their '91

I have recently restored it as well, although it wasn't in terrible shape to begin with.
