What Oil?

I dont have the owners manual for my GT and am up for an oil change. Whats the reccomended oil 5W20 or 5W30? I know a few people have used 5w20 but was looking on the Brenspeed site and they offer the Mobil 1 Synthetic pack with the 5W30 and also offer Royal Purple with 5W20?

I've already bought Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W20 and just want to make sure I'm good. Any reasons why theres two? Im a newb when it comes to oil.

Thanks

I use the Motorcraft 5W/20,but Mobil 1 is better.
I just can't justify the xtra cost when I change it every 3000 or less.

I think the recommeded oil weight is on your oil cap. I ditched mine a while back for the MGW, so I forgot if it was printed on it or not.

Mine says 5W-20, not sure why brenspeed sells that package and havnt asked but you should beable to get it cheaper by going to the autoparts store. Usually Brenspeed has good prices, on the oil though I think maybe not so much. I myself will go with RP but that is because my father-in-law used to own a napa shop which entitles me to discounts on stuff at Napa

and if youre doing it yourself - and this is the first change - get a good filter wrench. i swear they put loctite on the threads and put it on with an impact wrench

this is the type that worked for me (other types wouldnt work)

Out of curiosity, how big is the oil filter on these cars?

Is it the bigger kind or the smaller like on a lot of imports.

I'd guess the bigger size. I'd have to buy a new filter wrench if this is the case.

I'm not sure the exact size but it's one of the larger ones I've seen. Open your hood and look straight down and you'll see it sticking out at the bottom.

And there are seriously folks without owners manuals? Lots of really good information in those owners manuals. If you don't have one I really suggest picking one up and reading it. If you go the TMS timeline you can download owners manuals for each model year of the S197 for free in the respective documents section. Or you can all 4 manuals from the ford website for free too (owners, maintenance, quick reference, warrantee)

I use motorcraft 10w-30 in my GT. Ford actually recommends it in the Middle East, due to the average temperature being just 10 degrees below purgatory. The thing to remember with the 10w-30 is that it’s not semi-synthetic like the 5w-20 and thus should be replaced every 3k/3months.

Good info. Don't have a mustang to look at though. It looks like it's 1.5 to 2 times larger than my car's. Looks more like a truck filter. 4.6 vs a 3.0 I guess.

What makes you say "stay with the motorcraft ones"? Just curious what you found?

I have used mobil one and motorcraft filters since my first oil change in my 2005 V6. I bought a 6 pack of the filters on sale and is the only reason I use them. I have used Fram and others in the past with other cars and never had motor issues. A few cars went over 230,000 miles. I changed the oil every three months because living in AZ adds up the mileage from my commuting.

Yeah, its a good sized filter. Its the same as Ford uses on the F150's 4.6 and 5.4 (FL820S), which was cool cause I had 2 on the shelf that I had bought for my F150 (which I traded for the stang).

I use Mobil 1 and change my oil every 5000 or 4 months. Usually it's every 4 months since mine isn't a daily driver. Wal*Mart has 5 quart containers of Mobil 1 5-20W at a very good price. Check them out.
