i like the GT more

 

I voted for the pony too, but I won't go as far as to change it out. I'll leave the GT... it's looks pretty good too. What I don't like are the new Ford oval center caps on the wheels. I will definitely be getting some "bullitt" style caps with the pony and tri-bar logo.

By the way, how dumb is it to not have the Ford logo anywhere on the car, but then put it on the wheels? I think that's absolutely retarded. But that's another poll...

 

I'd prefer one with a shelby logo in it...

 

Integral part to the Mustang tradition? What was the last Mustang to actually have a big, bling-bling gas cap like that - late sixties, maybe the 71-73?

Sure it was on some traditional Mustangs but I wouldn't go so far as to call it integral to the Mustang tradition given that the vast majority of Mustangs didn't have one.

I wouldn't mind having the plate moved up there. While a necessity, better to have it well integrated into the car's overall styling rather than plugged into some additional hole/indent/bracket that would end calling yet more attention to it and detracting from the styling.

Anyway, guess what I'd like to see are design features that are more evocatively retro rather than full on repro, i.e., details that subtly harken back and reflect classic Mustang design elements but in an entirely modern way. My fear is that retro taken too far quickly grows stale and trite -- that these retro design elements need to be executed in a thoroughly modern and fresh idiom all while keeping the DNA intact. Not an easy balance, retro vs repro, but I think the gas cap goes a little too far repro.

I have a similar whine about the Bullitt wheels too, just to much repro rather than retro and looking too "been there, done that."

While I like them both, I like the v6 version better. Maybe I'll put my air freshener back there so the people behind me can smell the cinnamon!

I couldn't agree more. I saw the oval and was bothered by it. I would rather have a pony on the wheels than an blue oval.

Ford Racing center caps would be much sweeter!

 

I need to find out if it is just taped on or bolted on. When I stripe the car it will be easier to remove it and reinstall it if it is bolted. If it is taped, things will get messy.

They made almost 3 million "classic" Mustangs in 1964-1973. With the rear gas cap.

Then there were the Dark Ages (Mustang II), and they made about a million of those. This is where the gas cap moved off the rear fascia.

Then the 1979-1986 Mustang sold about 1.5 million copies. If you include all of that old worn out platform (1979-2004), you are looking at just over 4 million cars in the "modern" era that is now 25 years old.

So, your "heritage" of no-gas-cap was started by the Pinto abortion (Mustang II). And I wouldn't call a 4-3 advantage a "VAST MAJORITY".

Besides, as stated earlier, the Mustang II and the fox platform were NOT the styling influences of the '05 stang. Thank goodness.

Who was that guy that was creating aftermarket caps?...

As far as not having one. No way. It looks to plain without it. The back of the 05 doesn't look as mean to me as the 99-04's So in that case it looks better to go with the classic 60's look with the cap. That's just my opinion though.

I fits, and makes the car just a little more stealth.

Peel off the GT labels as well, and you may fool some people, if they don't see the twin pipes

Guess I was thinking more temporally -- last ones over thirty years ago -- than quantitatively.

In either case, I wish that had done it in a more modern interpretation than the overly bling-bling repro version now on the '05 -- perhaps something with a more finely machined look or something than a shiny pimp-pendant (hoh boy, that'll rile somebody up ).

Wonder if the aftermarket will come up with something like that, but they usually end up going for bigger, brighter, gaudier for the most part, so not much hope there.

 

Yeah, I could see it more as a simple brushed stainless steel...

"Brushed Nickel" is the hot thing in kitchen remodeling these days.
