I'd recommend going to a Motorcycle Dealer and trying on some half face and full faced helmets. It's much better to be able to try the stuff on.. Personally, I like the half face since it makes it feel like I'm not really wearing anything and at with my times it's still perfectly legal.

How rigid is your track about checking for the specs? Asking because some no longer allow Motorcycle rated helmets (this rating starts with a "M"). Per the NHRA site, the minimum helmet spec is Snell 2000 or SFI 41.1A. http://www.nhra.com/competition/etquickref.aspx
I have been looking into this as well since ragtops need one regardless of ET and have found a couple in the $200 range that should work. I am leaning towards this G-force Modified model as it has a wide field of view and is made with some light materials. http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-1781.htm
And at $219 shipped, not a bad deal.

The reason motorcycle helmets aren't allowed with some organizations is because they aren't rated for multiple impacts, and they don't have a fire retardant liner.
"How much is your brain worth to you?" is the question I ask myself.
Edit: I may have spoken too soon about the multiple impacts. I am looking into the standards now.
You should know that a new 2010 standard is on the way. Models meeting the new spec won't be out until later next year, though they will be legal for much monger than the 2005 certified helmets.
Further edit:
In separate tests, M2010 class helmets are subjected to 2 impacts from a flat or spherical object, and once with an edge-shaped object.
In separate tests, SA2010 class helmets are subjected to 2 impacts from a flat or spherical object, once with an edge-shaped object, and three times with a roll-bar shaped object.

I'm sorry to bust this guys to you.. Sure there are motorcycle helmets that do not have any of the above but my motorcycle shop and many others locally all sell helmets that surpass the required ratings.

I bought an Impact! helmet, and while it was more expensive than some of the others, it was made here USA and I had worn one before and worked great.
Remember that the helmet needs to fit snugly, if its loose, it will move around, and possibly come off at the time you need it most. Its also my opinion that you don't need a full face helmet unless you are racing a car without windows, or are really paranoid that your car is gona catch fire.
You can always pick the one you really want, and then find it at a race store, online store, ore even ebay.

As long as your shopping you might as well get a helmet that will grow with you. That means getting an automobile certified helmet.
THe problem with M series helmets is that they don't have the need for fire protection, so they don't. SA series helmets do. I personally have a Pyrotect for my HPDE activities. It's SA2005 Rated so I'll be able to use it for quite some time before needing a new one.
Price wasn't too bad either.

Same logic I had, that I'd rather too much than not enough when talking safety. Same reason I have a race helmet for skiing with hard ear protection. I also bought from Apex, awesome customer service and the free helmet bag is nice
