welp, just got rear ended

yep. everyone is sitting in bumper to bumper traffic going a MAX of 5 mph. im minding my own business looking for songs on the radio when BAM, a 2001 ford explorer slams into me. i couldnt believe it. everyone is barely moving, there isnt a cloud in the sky, the sun just went down so there is no sun glare, we are all going in straight lines and this punk rear ends me. he ended up putting a hole in the bumper with his jacka$$ tow hooks and scraped it up pretty nice. he didnt have his liscense on him, no proof of insurance. i wanted to deck him. all he had was the registration. i took down all the info i could off that and called 911. needless to say he is being summoned as we speak and i need to call the local precinct for all his info tomorrow.
the bumper wouldnt bother me in the LEAST bit since its just take off and put on. its the rear passanger side fender that has got me in such a rage. it actually bent OUT on the top of the wheel well. there is no paint chipping, the fender did not move at all since its in perfect alignment with the door and the rear bumper. the same spot just on the passenger side. now my question is, can that be banged out? this car is straight as an arrow and id hate to have a wavy panel just because of this jerk0ff that cant look ahead of him for a split second. i figure it will be hit back in, possibly body filler, sanded down and then painted but then i KNOW it isnt going to look as good as it once did :-(.
also, im going to tell his insurance company or whoever contacts me that i want the dealer to do all the work. is that possibly through an insurance company? i dont want some low life that thinks hes a professional body specialist putting crap parts with a terrible paint job on my black beauty.

Easy, I understand the rage and I'd be just as upset, but here's a little good and bad info.

... nevermind - I'm not going to speculate on the damage... post a pic so I can see what's going on.

As far as the shop, you can get it fixed wherever you want. A word of caution - the dealer isn't necessarily the best place. Sometimes you'll find that's where rookies train and then go to other shops in the area. Best to find a modern shop w/ a good reputation, regardless of their location or name. Most body techs are very good, and have amazing craftsmanship. Very few are lowlifes, especially very few at shops that are recommended by insurance companies.

Post a pic of the actual damage, I don't want to scare you, but also take out the spare tire cover and look at the rear floor pan and rear body panel if you can get the trunk trim off easily.

Edit : Actually, use your caution and judgment when opening the trunk, it may not close after you get it open.

That's good, there's less of a chance of rear body panel damage.

My fear is this - the quarter panel puckering out indicates that the rear end is sagging (frame pushed down toward the ground) in the back of the car. Look closely at your roof to see if there's any puckers in the sheetmetal.
The quarter panel also could be bent in the rear, behind the bumper cover from the impact, causing the deformation in the quarter. Neither are the best of news, but both are completely fixable and should result in an invisible repair.
Get some pics tomorrow, and good luck dealing w/ the ins co. Most are a lot more reasonable than their online reputations would make you think.

Maybe time for a GT500/GT CS rear bumper.

Sorry for the damage I feel your pain, I've been there....

agree with the up grade to the GT500/GT CS bumper... when given lemons... make lemonade and sell it.

+2 on the GT/CS rear bumper. Hope everything gets sorted out soon. Also hope the kid gets a little incentive from the law to pay attention.

Don't worry... Be Cool

"it actually bent OUT on the top of the wheel well"

The exact same thing happened to me about 5 MONTHS after I got my stang. I was stopped at a red light and some chick in a 2001 FORD EXPLORER rear ended me. Maybe these two are related!!! She was only going about 5 mph and she openly admitted to not paying attention and was very sorry about hitting me. The trunk lid was also popped up about 1/4 inch. I took it to my body guy who said that it wasn't as bad as it looked. He said the force of the impact pushed the bumber into the back quater and since the bumber didn't spring back all that force was held in place. The bumper had a big hole in it and quater panel had the same damage that you had. I was out my stang only three weeks. Worst part was is that I when I came home from the accident the UPS guy was just pulling up to deliver my brand spankin new SLP Loudmouth mufflers.

Man sorry to hear about that, I just got rear ended yesterday too but luckily it left only a small nick in the bumper. Get this, after she hits me and we exchange info, we start driving off and she texts me WHILE DRIVING saying she is sorry! People need to pay attention to the roads...

i just got back from the body shop and they gave me an estimate of $1300. he said the bumper will need to be replaced, and the rear quarter panel banged out, bondo and repainted from the rear of the car to the door and including the roof above the window so the panel has no inconsistancies with the paint. friday i get to go to the other guys insurance company office for "their estimate". i already told the woman on the phone thats fine but im not going to some joint in the bronx because they charge 700 for a $1300 job. she said no they just want to look at the damage and make sure the estimate is legit. so we shall see. o and the other guys insurance is allstate and from what i hear they are the WORST when it comes to paying out. here are some pictures of the damage. these pictures were taken with my cell phone camera 3.2 megapixle) so the quality isnt the best.

the last picture is of the rear passenger side quarter panel above the wheel well. its hard to see but if you see the powerlines in the reflection, thats where it is bowed out. actually there is more damage there that i didnt even see next to the "bowed out" spot. the body shop saw it right away and had to point it out to me and then i realized it was there. its a slight crease next to the spot i saw. so the fender needs to be banged out, (he didnt use those words im just paraphrasing) bondoed and painted. he tells me it will look like nothing ever happened. he also commented on how new the car looked.
atfirst he said what is this an 08? when i said nah 06 he was shocked. then i told him i just spent about 12 hours buffing it out for the summer and that it never sees snow and now it really never even sees rain or any kind of wet weather. i told him im slowly turning it into a show car and that id really like to get a show car quality job. he assures me that is exactly what im going to get and that the work done is guaranteed for life (unless the same spot gets hit ofcorse, which will never happen again hopefully knock on wood)
im going to go down there after i get the allstate guy to look at it and see how much it would be to also get a CDC chin spoiler painted. i might as well get something extra to make me feel better. i looked into the GT/CS bumper and it just cant afford it right now. ive been wanting the chin spoiler for a while so heres my excuse to get one.

thanks for all the sympathy everyone. i hope i get show car results. will keep u guys updated

Well, something else is going on. I wouldn't be surprised if when your car gets to the shop more damage is found. That quarter damage won't just appear unless there's more than what we see. I'm assuming that when they take that cover off, that they'll find more damage behind it.
Hopefully I'm wrong, so best of luck!

thanks. yea i was told they wont really know the full extent of the damage until they get under the cover. regardless i pay nothing. im slowly getting to the final stage of grievance....acceptance. i just cant drive it looking the way it does. whenever i see someone with a nice car and they have some body damage i always say to myself, why doenst that idiot just get it fixed?! and now i feel like im that idiot so until the car is driven to the body shop, in the garage it stays.

When somebody hits me, I take all the info. and call my insurance only.
I have tried to deal with other companies to no avail.
If they have to subrogate my deductible, I know I will get it eventually.
It is not worth the aggravation to do it any other way.

True, except for that it's still noted as a claim on your claims history, and has potential future impact on rates, etc, for most insurance companies.

Having no insurance it outright stupid. My lawyer sued a lady driving an older car with no insurance for her home, car and new boat.I was off work for a year due to a broken wrist and back.My 73' Hornet was hardly damaged from being rear ended but I took a pretty bad beating.

Now you have to foot the bill for this moron.
