Trouble with the Cops and Military
Trouble with the Cops and Military
I got pulled over last night going 220km/h in a 120km zone. (Thats 136mph in a 75 zone for you Yanks.) It was 3am on an almost empty super highway (8 lanes each direction) linking Kuwait and Saudi. The cop that pulled me over luckily couldn't speak any English. So I smiled at him and pretended I have no clue what he wants. He eventually got me to hand him my license. I gave him my Canadian license, and he just looked at it, assumed I was military, smiled and let me go. I couldn’t believe that I just got off this easy. Once I get to the Saudi border, I find an American MP unit is waiting for me. Apparently the cop radioed the border telling them there is an out of control soldier on the way. Luckily, I’m neither a soldier, nor American, so I was let go again. The MP’s were nice enough, and one of them really digs Stangs, so I let him get in the driver’s seat for a quick spin. He raced his buddy in the Hummer and, needles to say, my baby smoked that oversized house on wheels. All in all an interesting experience. Moral of the story: BUY A RADAR DETECTOR. I’ll be getting mine ASAP.

Ah yes, thats a nice unit new for '07. I like it too but I mount my 8500 X50 to the visor and I'm afraid the 9500i would not be able to pick up the GPS signal from there. I'm not sure if it needs a clear line of sight to the sky or not.
Just Got a Warning
About an hour ago, I had a state trooper come flying up from behind in a Dodge Charger. I was in the fast lane and saw him coming and slowed down a bit and then pulled over one lane to let him go past. He pulled right behind me and flashed the blues. He had me for 83 MPH in a 65 and just gave me a written warning after some small talk about Mustangs LOL. If he had seen any sign of a radar detector there's little doubt in my mind I would have received a ticket. They certainly have their benefits but for me to use one It'd have to be totally concealed from view. In a few states nearby they are illegal. I don't know what the penalty is if caught using one and I don't want to find out. Anyone here ever been bagged for having one?
wouldn't the morale of the story be don't do nearly twice the posted speed limit! Almost empty is not empty now is it. Now I am not going to turn this into one of those "what were you thinking topics" but I am glad you did this in Kuwait and not a highway I was driving on.

I haven't seen these yet.
What town were you in?
I hope it wasn't Troop B (Milford).
sounds like cops have radar/laser guns in Kuwait?
i'd doubt a detector would be any good in that case especially if he caught you from behind.. cuz by the time it beeps, you're already busted :S
luckily here in Dubai all radars are forward facing, including the mobile ones

I’ve been reading some great reviews of this thing. **** expensive, but I guess well worth it. Will order one very soon. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
They are legal here in Kuwait. Even the radar jammers are legal, but I don’t wanna go that far, cause I can imagine that it will seriously **** off a cop.

Almost empty on an 8 lane super highway, perfectly straight, smooth as silk, and track caliber is empty enough for me. This road would make the 401 look like a country dirt road.
Yup legal for radar jammers and detectors, and there are no lasers in Kuwait, but I guess its legal too. As for the FCC, of course they have no jurisdiction here, its strictly a US agency and they don’t have jurisdiction outside of the US. Maybe they have jurisdiction over the US army stationed here, but even that I doubt.
Cobra XRS9930 is what I have and I've been happy with it.

You’re assumption is correct. Canuck and proud.
Been working here now for 3 years. Great money, and pretty impressive infrastructure for a country considered “third world”. There is opulence and luxury here everywhere. In many regards its more advanced than Toronto. There is also a huge number of N.American’s and Europeans here, so you don’t feel homesick much. Extremely cheap gas is also a great bonus (38 cents for a gallon of 95 octane!) Winters are nice and mild, summers are hotter than hell, by far. Some have radar guns, no lasers. I actually figured out why they are using them this week. Its traffic week (YAY!!!) its all over the GCC also, so your cops in Dubai will also be a little more **** this week. All radars and cameras here in Kuwait are forward facing as well (except the red light ones, which can also catch you speeding). I’ve recently heard that Sheik Zayed Rd. in Dubai had its limits upped to 160km (100mph) !!!! That’s gotta be fun.
there are other roads with unposted speed limits of 160+km/h (100mph)
The Cobras are inexpensive detectors, but they are a waste of money. The radar detector forums call them nasty nicknames, because they leak and affect good detectors. Never put two detectors in the same car and turn them on! FYI I have a Cobra in my other car and its range is very very limited. I had to be literally in front of a constant-on Ka band signal for the Cobra to read it from 90 degrees. My Bel Vector 985 started picking up the signal 1/2 mile away on top of a hill in the suburbs.
The one thing detectors can't do well is predict Instant-On radar. If they are legal in Kuwait (as it appears to be), buy genuine radar and laser jammers and use it in conjunction with a good detector. Once you pick up a signal, slow down and turn off the jammers.

May Have Been a County Sheriff
Actually, it may have been a Rockingham County Sheriff and not a State Trooper. The color was gold and forest green. We were on RT 101 west on the Epping/Raymond line. He was really cool about the situation talking about my car and of course he had to tell me about the hemi in his. I told him the new Challenger was going to be my next car which put a smile on his face. My wife said he looked very familiar and when I thought about it I think she was right. We take a walk everyday and I swear go right past this guy's house about a mile away. I've seen marked cars in his driveway and know his neighbor very well so next time I see him I'm going to offer him a chance to drive my car. Kind of like having a get out of jail free card LMAO!
This is a very wealthy country. Those spoiled cops drive BMW M5's. Plus I wasn't trying to outrun him, when his flashers went on I immediatly slowed down.
