time for a new stereo...1 question

after researching how-to installs of a new in dash dvd screen receiver (not sure which one im going with specifically just yet) i decided to do it myself. seems pretty simple, one color wire to another. BUT after "outfitting my car" via crutchfield.com, it said i need this PAC ford radio replacement interface to get it in the car:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_127C2RF...Interface.html

has anyone on here installed an indash dvd touch screen receiver in their 2006 mustang GT with the shaker 500 system (no subs) themselves? specifically the shaker 500 factory stereo since crutchfield is saying i need this interface to replace the d@mn skipper500. wondering if i really do need this $129.99 wire dealie or if i can just go with a run of the mill $20 wire harness kit (which crutchfield is supposed to supply for free with the purchase of a new head unit). i know ill need a Voltage Regulator to eliminate that "popping sound" u get when turning on the stereo.

my PIE aux input adapter fried about 2 months ago and ever since then ive been going crazy without my ipod hooked up to the car. i refuse to use one of those FM transmitters...the quality is just atrocious! figured instead of buying a new aux input adapter, id just go with my dream stereo hahahaha. bluetooth, gps (prob added down the road), dvd playback, touchscreen, HD radio, XM radio, all that jazz! Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks guys and gals!

I installed a touchscreen/dvd/gps in my 05 replacing the Shaker 500. I only used the $20 harness you are talking about. You will need a mounting kit as well, another $20. I didn't use the voltage regulator method, I found a 5v out on my head unit.

Make sure you get one with separate sub control, you will be absolutely amazed how well the stock subs perform when properly crossed over.

I installed a pioneer avh p3200dvd (since it can be added to) and just used the standard kits. Made my own 5v adapter. Not hard at all. I have the shaker 1000 and the new HU made a HUGE differance in the sound. I went through sonic electronics though.

I used the PAC Interface when I replaced my HU. It's overkill and it still needs to be modified or your HU will reboot when you play anything with bass at anything over a low volume. Save yourself the $$ and a headache and get the $20 adapter and a 5v rectifier from Radio Shack.

wow glad i asked! saved me a few extra $$$'s. thanks everyone for the valuable info. crutchfield supplies the mounting kit for free when you buy a headunit through them, but if i dont go through them (and chances are i wont, amazon kicks their @ss with almost every unit ive found) i know that ill need to buy one myself. sorta looking at :

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Wxy7B58...ion-VX401.html

what do u think? anyone have this one?

amazon price: http://www.amazon.com/Clarion-VX401-...4206682&sr=8-1

crutchfield is 449.99 but includes mounting kit which normally is 14.99 and an antenna adapter which is 12.99

*****new question now.....is the antenna adapter needed? i know some stock radio antennas can be at a right angle and it seems like this so called adapter is straight...will the stock one fit in this radio if it IS right angled?

Whatever you buy, just make sure there is a workaround for using the NAV while driving. It's a real PITA to pull over and pull up the E-brake when you want to change something.

It's also a PITA to kill someone while messing with the NAV while driving.

I didn't need an antenna adapter for mine and mine was angled, you shouldn't need one. I don't have any experience with that HU but it looks good.
