Teaching Session - Exhaust
Hey guys,
I am very unknowledgeable when it comes to exhaust and the differences between them all. Can we have a teaching course on this?
What are the differences between them (chambered, glassed, true-dual, butterfly-valved, etc)
Also, does the exhaust make the gurgling sound on older cars or the rumbling sound on the new cars or is that the engine? And mufflers, I thought were to dampen the sound of the engine only, are they doing emissions too?
Basically share what you know on exhaust systems and how they work.
Thanks.

this is kind of a big topic so like 06... said the AM videos or other research on the net might be a good way to look into it ... I bet our friend Google could come up with some good stuff ... a couple quick answers to some of your specific questions:
- mufflers are for sound reduction only; the catalytic converters are upstream in the exhaust system and help with the emmissions
- "chambered" means the exhaust flows through some chambers with sheet-metal partitions between them, these are generally the rectangular shaped mufflers where the exhaust comes in one corner, goes toward the back, makes a u-turn through some "chambers", then another u-turn and comes out the other corner
- "straight through" means the exhaust basically flows straight through the muffler, with no chambers . . . these basically have a perforated pipe through the middle with some kind of sound-deading packing around that pipe; the packing can be fiberglass hence the term "glasspack" or stainless steel wool or other materials
- "true dual" means the exhaust has two sepaarate pipes from the manifolds all the way to the back of the car
- "butterfly valve" system uses a valve to open the exhaust up to the outside world without going through the muffler, like open headers on demand
