Rumor has it that the SVT model Mustang will no longer be called the Cobra, as Carroll Shelby wants the rights to it for himself. The SVT model will be called the SVT Mustang GT 500. As to what the 500 stands for, thats till unknown, but does anyone inside SVT care to confirm/deny this?

It will most likely be the SVT. I don’t think any 500 will be in it, nor will the GT. It will just be “2005 SVT Mustang.â€

this came from someone reliable too, and it was made official yesterday. Remember that earlier when they announced that they were going to unveil the SVT Mustang in NY, they didnt call it a Cobra then.

Wasn't it called the SVT Cobra Mustang in SVT's last press release?

Like I said I'm positive it won’t have “GT†in it, “500†is questionable, would only have this if it had 500hp, and I’m guessing it will have 430-450. As for dropping the name cobra that is possible.

If anything is going to be called a GT 500, it will be the Shelby.

I've seen that before, and thats been around a long time. My understanding is that this just went down within the last week or so, so I understand that im going to get a lot of friction about this, but for the record I wouldnt be surprised if it was called something besides Cobra. The Shelby is going to be about 80k too from what i hear.

Originally Shelby chose the GT"500" name because he wanted a number on his car higher than any other car of that time- such as the 426 Hemi's and the 454 Chevelle's. Shelby wanted his Mustang creation to be on top which is what derived to the '68 GT500KR "King of the Road."

Now with the rumors of the new Shelby Mustang having the 5.4 with 550hp, maybe it will be upped to GT550 standing for the hp count?

I hope Shelby produces Cobra for 2007 as we all have heard. If SVT is producing Mustang still, I hope it's a 2006 model year car. This makes more sense to me. Previously, were being told the 2007 Cobra will be unvailed next month. I started a thread recently asking why would we see a 2007 model year car revealed at the beginning of 2005. Didn't make sense. Now, if SVT is to reveal a car next month, I bet it will be a 2006 SVT Mustang. This is perfect considering I'm waiting till year end to order my Mustang. Now hopefully, I can get the SVT since I know the Shelby will be out of my league.

your correct about everything, except for the KR

gm was planning to introduce a 69 camero king of the road, and ford found out about this

so at mid model year came out the GT 500 KR

So now what will all the Cobra owners with snake-vanity plates do
if/when they upgrade to SVT Mustang? How about: GOT GLUE
or GO GLUE? Eventually someone's gonna ask the SVT owner "Is
that a Mustang Cobra?" and you'll have to say it's an svt mustang.
Just not quite the same bite.

It'll still be a great car but what will be the front emblem then?

I think Camaro is the most misspelled car name in history. Not that that bothers me.

and I quote from the Mustang: Fourty Years book written by Randy Leffingwell

for the GT 350
pg. 109
"The story goes that Shelby looked across the street and asked his chief engineer Phil Remington how far away he thought a building was from where they sat. Remington had worked as an engineer for Scarab race car builder Lance Reventlow in the Venice shops Shelby now leased. Remington stayed with the shops when Reventlow vacated, adopting Shelby and the new operation. The each made guesses and then Remington paced it off. It came to 350 feet. "Fine," Shelby said, "let's call the little car the GT-350. If the car's good, the name won't matter, and if it's no good, the name won't matter." Of course, it didn't hurt that this new name coincided with the recent trend, such as Chevrolet's 327s and Ferrari's 250s, 275s, and 330s"

and for the GT 500
pg.159
"Significantly, Ford did offer to Shelby the big block 428-ci Cobra Jet engine for the Mustang, and in some limited cases, he was able to acquire 427-ci engines as well. He renamed the big block the "Cobra Le Mans." While Shelby, his engineers, and Ford's designers and planners figured out uses for these engines, the Texan must have looked out the window once again. Now Instead of guessing the distance to an old, familiar building, perhaps he wondered how far he had come from earlier, simpler challenges. More likely, as before, he considered the 409s, 421s, 426s, 427s, and 440s, when he derived the designation GT500 for the 1967 big-block Cobra-Jet versions of his Mustang."

So in summing this all up, Dingo is correct. Just forming more argument for his case.

as far as an 06 SVT model, I highly doubt that anything will come of it. If you are more interested in buying the SVT model then wait till 07. It will truly be worth it. Don't buy a GT now and kick yourself a year down the road when the SVT comes out. Myself, I'll be keeping my GT for many years down the road, and enjoying the 300 or so horsepower that I get out of it. Maybe someday when that rumored 6.2L Hurricane motor gets released I'll look at an engine swap. But until then, I'll continue to enjoy my 05 mustang GT. I'm hoping that someday I'll be able to turn the keys over to my 3 year old son, and let him carry on a fine tradition. Hopefully it will be the 05, but more realistically it will probably be a newer one.

Very well spoken, and I agree. I think 2007 MY will be one of the most promising in Mustang history, but I'm afraid that Cobra will only be reserved for those of you wanting to shell out about 80 grand for a Mustang. I think if they do go through and call it the SVT Mustang GT 500 that it will be worthy of the name, and hopefully go after those higher priced Vette Z06s with the same. Originally I heard 430-440 HP, but now theres a little stir that it might end up with 500 HP, but at a slightly higher expense.

Now lets think for a second, a 40K, 500 HP car, or a 55K 500 HP car? i think this is a simple question for us. I guess NY will tell the truth.

Ford has to much name capital invested in the svt cobra, the name isnt going anywhere but they may push it towards svt mustang cobra with plans on ditching the cobra name but as far as shelby using it, its doubtful since the plans for the cobra were ditched in favor of the GR1 which most certaintly isnt a cobra. It is a daytona coupe, though I doubt they will use that name either.
