Strange engine noise

The past couple of days, I've noticed a strange sound when the engine is warm by the front of the driver's side valve cover and #5 plug/coil.

It sounds like a bunch of BB's shaken in a plastic film container. Not loud or consistent. Not real noticable with the hood closed and it is not the normal injector tick. Pass side sounds normal.

I did first notice it when the car was idling after a drive with the hood closed. It kind of a muffled metallic rattle and definitely in the drivers side front of the engine.

It does not happen after a cold start or after about 2k from what I can hear.

Coil shorting or making noise?

Any ideas before I take it in ?

You could be getting ready to drop a valve. That or the VCT like previously stated could be it. Its probaly a dumb question from me to you but do you have enough oil in your motor? Just a thought.

Yup, there is enough oil in it.

Well, if it chews up a valve, I might get a new engine. It's still under warranty for another 12k or until Dec.

If it is still under warrenty i would have it checked out. I know when my car dropped a valve i was out of warranty. The only saving grace was that ford said it was the block that messed up so they replaced my motor for free under fords 5 year motor guarantee. So i still got a new motor for free and they put all my mods back on it and tuned it so its all under a warranty now.

The only engine bay mods on my car are a drop in K&N, JLT catch can, and an STB.

Let's see if they balk at that.

If it turned out to be oil related , they might try and blame the catch can ...

Moly is great stuff. The bob is the oil guy forum has countless threads on it. It's a friction reducer and almost eliminates engine wear. The front page at bitog has a big write up on it. Red-line and royal purple already include it in their oil. Check it out. Enlightening. I use it in every vehicle I own. My 99 chev with a 5.3 engine got 60 miles a tank better mileage with it and my mustang gets 45 miles per tank more. I don't really believe in oil additives but this stuff lives up to it's claims and hype.

Ya. I dont like to think about it too much. If i can add anything to it id be happy. But i guess we have to sacrifice gas mileage to go fast.

I really wouldn't endorse any oil additive but this stuff really does work. And for the 6 bucks it costs you don't really have anything to lose. Fuel economy will peak after about the 3rd tank as it takes about 500-600 miles to thoroughly "plate" the moving parts. I have a write up on it on my site that's in my sig. And we allow street racing stories because we are not sponsored. So if you want to get a few kills off your chest by all means post them there.

The only thing they could say about the catch can is that "there is not enough crud on the throttle body, CM plates, intake, and the valves. Those parts must be coated with burnt oil film to operate properly."

I'd have to raise the BS flag on that one! On the driver's side, the oil blows into the intake from the valve cover.

You would be surprised what BS ford will come up with. They tried to tell me that the blow by oil was necessary to oil the valves. So i asked them why there isnt a hose on the passenger side. They said that the blow by oil has enough force to make it to the other side of the motor. Im not making this up either. That is exactly what a tech at ford said.
