Well as right now they are not having any trouble selling them. If they only have one GT on the lot, I can understand why they wouldn't want anyone to test drive it, hard telling what might happen that may get it banged up.

 

I asked for a test drive at my local dealer. At first, they kind of acted like they didn't want any of their cars out for a drive, unless they felt they had a strong possibility for a sale.

The lease on my 02 runs out in april, and I plan on having a new GT by then. They said I should drive in Jan or Feb when I order the car. However, I told them that I wanted to drive the car before there was snow on the ground. (Probally not an issue in FL though!) Finally, after enough arm twisting, I had them convinced, and we went for a drive. (I will give them a shot at selling me the car, if they can work out the numbers I want.)

Basically, all I'll say is this: The 05 is better than my 02 in every way, except for, IMO, the brakes feel stronger in my 02. The 05 doesn't feel as fast either, however, one quick glance down at the spedo, at WOT, with the needle climbing faster that you can comprehend, you begin to releazie the true performance of this car.

If you are moving up from a previous mustang, and were happy with it, you will be 100 times happer with the 05. If you have never driven a mustang before, I would strongly recommend a test drive, as driving a rwd car with lots of torque and power can take some getting used to.

 

I actually had the same problem. Went to one dealer and was told that "they weren't letting people test drive it b/c it would rack up miles and then they'd have to sell it as a discount". Personally I think it was because I'm 27, was wearing jeans and a t-shirt and hadn't shaved. Went to another dealer during the week right after work and was dressed up and looking good and was treated with total respect. Didn't have any issues about letting me drive one there.

As for driving a V6 vs. GT, I'd say that the V6 doesn't really give you a feel of what to expect with the GT. I first drove a V6 and was completely impressed. I even considered getting one........... right up until I drove the GT. I was COMPLETELY blown away. I'd say keep looking at different dealers until someone lets you drive the GT. It's worth the wait!!

 

i had no problem being able to test drive a GT and im up in NJ and im 17.....and just like he said (the post above mine) the GT blew me away

 

You can definately drive a V6 and get a feel for the ergonomics...gauges, reach, cup holders, space, etc.

 

you can test drive the 6 first (like I did) and get to know where everything is at and comfortable with the seats and stuff there is not a whole lot of difference IMO between the two

DO NOT judge the performance on the 6 though because I was a little disapointed in the 6's get up and go.

If the off the line performance and handling is something important to you then definitely drive a GT. There is a world of difference between the two in this category.

 

At my local Ford dealer they don't allow test drives on 2005s PERIOD.

For some reason, their sales of 2005 Mustang is .... slow. Black GT was there for over a week before it was sold. Later they got 2 V6, one was sold after 2 weeks, other one is still there (its been over 3 weeks).

But I'm 100% positive that noone drove V6 Mustang that is still there. I stop by few times, always in same place. Other than automatic transmission, it have no other options.

 

All I can say is "You Won't Be Dissapointed" if you ever do get to drive one somewhere. I didn't even sit in one until I drove mine off the lot. I knew It would be fine after reading all the guys talking on here.

 

My first ride in a GT will be in MY GT...the dealerships around here only had 1 or 2 each and they sold within days if not hours of their arrival...

 

Same here, I've resolved myself to test driving the one I ordered before I take delivery..... come on next week...get here!

 

I didn't even drive mine before I bought it. B) I drove a V-6, and this coupled with all the 'Road Test' write-ups were good enough for me. The V-6 showed me the comfort/fit/finish, and I already knew what the GT was, based on the plethora of articles I have researched. If they are offering you a test drive in a V-6, then take it.....and then imagine the GT as being twice the fun factor IMO, and I'm probably not far off in that assessment. You really can't go wrong with either car....but if you can afford the insurance and extra cost....get the GT.

 

Can't get a test drive on a GT here in Austin either. The dealer told me they would call me when they could let me

 

mav: as others have said, you can get an idea of how the inside is, but the performance is a big difference. Personally, I was very disappointed and worried when I drove an ATX GT the morning before I got the chance in a MT GT that afternoon. WORLDS of difference, and I signed on the dotted line that night.

 

 

or You can just go to Hertz and rent a V6, that's what I'm doing on my next trip to Fla. (12/9-12/14) Gonna have it for a whole 5 days! I can't wait to see the look on my kid sister's face when I pull up to the house, she loves the car it's just too bad she's not old enough to drive yet.

 

Test drives in New England are hard to arrange too. One dealer nearby requires the full credit application to be approved before turning over keys. Having a car on order gets me test drives at my own dealer but they are watching the accumulation of test miles carefully too.

 

Maybe the reason sales are so slow is they're so unaccomodating on test drives!

 

Here near toledo, oh, I have test driven both the gt 5sp manual as well as auto. local dealer with manual was a little "weird" about it, but let me & wife drive it no problem. another dealer that I looked at had a black gt manual trans and they were also "lets go for a drive, thats what its here for, come on!!" i didnt go on that test drive because I was on my lunch break and didnt have time.

my best friend is friends with the owner of the dealership that had the auto trns gt. that guy basically said, "go beat the crap out of it" so we got on it a little.

both cars were awesome, but I ended up ordering the redfire gt manual trans.

 

it's dealers like that that make me glad I ordered and was very specific as to what I wanted when it got to the dealership.
