This may be a dumb question but, although I find the 05 steering wheel perfect for the retro look, I have come to be intrigued by the convenience of stereo controls on the steering wheel. Would it be possible to install custom stereo controls on the wheel, or should I give up? Thanks

Your best bet would be Sony-esque satallite controls that sit just behind the wheel.

With Airbags, Cruise control and the horn, the wheel is already a little "busy"

It would not be feesable. The column stalks like the svt foci has is superior and can be used under stressfull driving easier then the wheel ones. Its also left-hand only so you do not have to use your shifting hand to change anything. All the steering controls require you right hand which is dumb. I still seem to prioritize driving over gizmos though, call me crazy. To me it just seems if you need to look at anything to adjust its settings when you are driving is silly to have in a car. I-drive comes to mind as the dumbest thing to ever be put in an automobile, it should be tilted for the passenger so the driver can not even use it. You have driving controls , air conditioning and a stereo, thats all you need.

it is possible.... but you have to give up your cruise control buttons- heres a link to mustangworld.com where someone rewired his cruise control buttons to control the volume on his stereo... I wouldn't try it on the new mustang..... but if its what you want- gopher it-

It shouldnt matter if the cars ergos are well designed for driving instead of entertaining.

Just learn the location of all your controls! If the Shaker & Mach systems are like the one on the Escape on/off is a push on the volume button, which in turn a right turn will turn it up, left turn turns it down.

It isn't really THAT difficult. I have a remote for my current deck and it is so completely pointless. I can reach 5" and push a button or be uber lazy and use a remote. I know exactly where all my controls are, heck I can navigate a few menus without even looking.

Thats just what we need: something else to distract the driver. Hmm, so lets see, next track or is that cruise control on? Or maybe thats the nitrous button???

No, that's all YOU need.

Not to belabor the point, but we're back to the stone knives and bear skins argument again! Controls mounted on the wheel are designed so that you don't have to take your hands off the wheel to perform aux functions - it's a safety feature and expect to see it in more and more cars.

Or more importantly, you do not have to take your eyes off the road. The percentage of motor accidents involving people looking at / playing with their stereos and thus colliding with something is ridiculous!!

Yes there are people who have accidents for that reason. But there are also people who get in accidents while trying to talk/use their cellphones. Or talking to thier children. Or playing with thier dog. It's really a matter of people needing to be smarter when they drive. Not neccessarily needing radio controls on thier steering wheel.

On a side note. A stereo installer told me you can buy controls that go on the steering wheel. They just don't mount permanently only the wheel.
