Steeda Underive Pulleys for my 05 GT

Hey I just wanted to say a nice thing happened to me the other day. I saw an ad on craigslist where this guy was giving aways for free Steeda underdrive pulleys and a SCT X3 if you can use them. I saw the ad late at night and didnt bother emailing him because I thought he probably got a zillion replys. Then in the morning I thought what the heck, I told him I would love to have the stuff for my 05 GT. He emailed me back and said you were the only guy that said what you were going to do with the stuff...so he gave them to me. The other emails he got were probably from people who were just going to resell the stuff. Ya he traded in his 06 GT and put everything back to stock.

I always wanted to buy underdrive pulleys, just never got around to it. The only boltons I did were Steeda CAI and Borla axlebacks. Back in the day I bought a Diablo Predator programmer. The SCT X3 is waaaaay nicer than the old Predator. I programmed my car with a strategy tune, feels pretty good. The only thing with Steeda undrive pulleys he left the Steeda alternator bolt on his car and he must have misplaced the Steeda install bolt...I just picked those up at a machine shop.

I read Taco Bills install guide. I bought a 3 jaw puller from Amazon that didnt work, the Jaws were too thick and didnt have enough of a hook. So I went to Canadian Tire for the free puller rental, it was an OEM brand puller and it worked like a charm. The crank bolt was super easy and I really didnt think it would work...I have alot of Milwaukee tools. So I tried this little Milwaukee M12 stubby 3/8 impact with a shallow 18mm socket. It worked and had the bolt out in seconds

The SCT X3 already came in super duper handy. About 10 years ago I did the first plug change at about 40K. So I got the Lisle extractor tool and Champion 7989. Got all the plugs out without breaking any. I had a 7989 that was misfiring. I was so pissed, I pulled the 7989s out and went with these E370. In the last 10 years I put about 60K on the car and the E370 have been excellent, just figured it was time. I put the Champion 7989 in for the heck of it and I still had the misfire, but the SCT X3 told me which cylinder was misfiring...my old Predator never did that. So anyways I just picked up 1 7989 and it seems to be running great.

I put new cop on my car too. I wasnt having any issues, I just saw these Amazon ones that were so cheap. I got these Bravex...not sure if they will prove to be crap, but so far they are excellent. Bravex has a coil/plug package too

thanks for that info, nice report

I had a heckuva time getting the crank bolt out when I did my UDP's, of course I did not have an impact wrench .... my car is manual transmission so I put it in gear, but I moved the whole car when trying to get that bolt out! the parking brake did the trick, LOL ....torquing it properly was not much easier

you might get people warning you that the UDP's will cause problems with charging -- I think that was with the earlier years, I have had no issues on my 2010

Thanks for sharing your very unique story and was pleased you were able to get the Steeda UDP's and SCT X3 programmer for free from the original owner who no longer had any use for them...
Just goes to show that it does indeed prove that honesty is always the best policy which the original owner noticed in your e-mail inquiry when describing about putting them to good use for your 2005 Mustang GT...

In the meantime, congrats to you and well deserved...

It was actually a pretty easy job with that little stubby impact. I have Milwaukee M18 1/2" impact, but its fairly large. I honestly didnt think the Milwaukee M12 stubby would do it, but I guess the crank bolt isnt torqued in there that hard. I just wanted to say it worked and tons of people have Milwaukee tools. If someone was going to do the job, you might be able to borrow one.

I think back in the day I was kinda worried about charging problems as I do have a fairly potent 5 channel Alpine PDX V9 amp and maybe my air not working quite right. Gas is so expensive now, even if I only maybe pick up 1 mpg, its worth it.

The guy lived about 60 miles away fro me, but it was still well worth it. Nobody usually gives that kid of stuff away for free, I guess I just got lucky. I told the guy how much I appreciated the stuff and said if he ever needed help with anything by me to not hesitate to call. He returned his car to stock and he said he wasnt entirely sure the SCT X3 wouldnt be married still. I told him it worked and he said he was happy for me. The guy was a really nice guy.

No doubt, as it's indeed very rare to come across someone who gives away equipment like that... So, yes you were indeed very lucky... I guess there are still some nice people in this world, they're just very rare to come by these days...

As for the person who gave you the SCT X3, as long as the original vehicle has been returned to stock, for which he did, this unmarries the programmer from the vehicle, so no worries to be concerned about there...

Once again, glad everything worked out with both the Steeda UDP's and SCT X3... Well-deserved indeed

You talk about nice people, I have a story for everyone...nobody does this, not in this day and age, but it is 100% true

I was having issues with a fairly new alternator for my Stang. I was going to work and that was it for the alternator, not charging at all, dash warning lights coming on...oh no. I basically coasted off the highway to an off ramp/overpass. I didnt have phone with me, so I wasnt sure what to do. This farmer drove by me with this specialized tractor. On the way back he stopped and asked if I needed help. I told him my battery was totally dead and was having alternator issue. He said I am just on my way home, I will grab my truck and come back and get you. You can take your battery out and we will charge it up.

So he comes back and gets me and my batttery, We went to his farm and put my battery on a charger. He said listen I have to go do some fieldwork, you are going to have to get back to you car...so this is the unbelievable part, he hands me the keys to an almost new Buick SUV. I looked at him and said what, nobody does this. How do you know I will come back back. He just laughed and said I know you will. He said bring your car back here and make sure your battery is charged right up and if you have to run into town, you can use the Buick. You can use the shop for whatever you need.

I flagged him down out in the field. So we left in his truck again so I could drive his SUV back. I just gave my battery a full charge, so it would be enough to get me home. I told quite a few people this story and nobody could believe that the guy just gave me the keys to a new SUV. I guess the guy saw something in me, maybe he liked my Stang ..

Perhaps I should consider moving to Vancouver, BC... As we sure don't have people anything like this in the Pittsburgh, PA region... lol

This was only a few years ago too. It was just outside Vancouver, Chilliwack to be exact...its more of a rural area. I was a bit flabberghasted when the guy did that, as there isnt anybody like that around here anymore either. I have never heard of anyone else doing that. I cant see myself handing some keys to a stranger, its something I will never forget.

Just looking at your signature. I used to have a 1981 Capri. Mine was a Whitecat, I think there was less than 500 made. It had a V8, but I think it was a 260 cu inch. It was White and had this gold pinstripe down the side and at the front of each fender there was a gold cougar and it had a gold grill too. The interior was black with gold cloth inserts and T Roof. It had the stupid gold TRX wheels which were 390mm and Michelin was the only company which made tires for it. It was the early days of the metric system and Michelin thought they were going to get the jump on everybody and have the first metric tires, but it never really caught on. Years later I put I think they were 1988 Mustang GT wheels/tires on it.

it should be torqued in there really really hard; pretty sure it is "torque to yield" which is something crazy like 190 ft-lb plus another quarter turn if I remember correctly???

I don't remember the exact torque spec, but hope you found and followed the torque spec when you re-installed

Ya I cheated and used my impact. I bought a new bolt from Ford here and it was like $38 CAD with taxes...that was the worst part of the job lol

Follow Ford's recommended torque sequence:
Step 1) torque to 66 lb-ft
Step 2) loosen bolt 1 full turn
Step 3) torque to 37 lb-ft
Step 4) tighten bolt an additional 90 degrees

I got another cute car story. this happened to me about 35 years ago. Its not a Mustang story, but it is a cute car story.

I sitting first in line at the red light, the lane closest to the curb. I had a 340 Duster, it was loud, cammed, headers, etc...really lumpy idle. All of a sudden my passenger door is opening and this old guy about 75 or 80 gets in and closes the door. I didnt miss a beat, I didnt yell at him. I said "so whats up". The old guy asks "are you going out to the mall". So I am like ahhhhhhhh ya, I wasnt. The mall is about 5 miles away, maybe a little less. I just figured what is it going to hurt to give this old guy a ride. I dropped him off at the front doors of the Mall

My car was an intimidating kinda car. I had a loud Alpine stereo system, so I most likely had the tunes cranked. So for this old guy to get in was pretty funny. Nowadays you would be thinking you are getting carjacked or robbed. Just a funny moment in life I will never forget
