Speedometer - 120 vs 140?

Does anyone know why Ford uses a 120 mph speedometer in the GT while the Focus ST gets a 140 mph speedometer? I'm looking at Ford brochures and noticed this. Ford's awfully optimistic about the 151 hp I4 in that ST.

Actually my '06 GT has a 140 speedo.
I've never sat in one, but I'm guessing the V6 models get the 120 speedo.
I drove a '96 Mustang V6 for several years and it had the 120 speedo.

That would explain it. The Ford brochure only shows the 120 mph speedo, and its probably from the V6 model.

Yep, it's the V6 that has the 120 speedometer, although I've never tried to top it out.

Yeah, V6 has 120. I've read that it's governed at 113mph though. I personally haven't tested that theory.

(but i got close!)

the V6 does have the 120. but unless you have a tune to take off the gov. you can only make it up to 115 in 4th gear with about 4000 RPM's. sitll wants to run

My 07 GT has 140. Find it suprising they use two different speedometers. Figured it was a more unique speedomter with the retro look why they would want to carry two different models in their inventory.

They probably have the 2 different speedos for the 'people' that think that a speedo is how you tell how fast a car can go.

you would not believe the number of people that have asked 'is it fast? what does the speedo go too' ... I just don't even know what to say..

I don't know where that theory ever came from. My Ford Tempo would bury the needle just past 80mph, but I know some older 'Vette's that can't hit the 150 mark their speedo had... come to think of it... might have even been 180 - don't remember, tried it with a friend once.

I had a guy swear to me one time that his 2000 Celeca would go faster than my stang since it had a 160 speedo in it. He wouldn't take no for an answer, and strangely...he didn't want to race to prove it. He kept saying "if I get another ticket my license is toast." wussy...

LOL, So true. I've been asked numerous times, "What's the speedo go up to...?" I'm not sure how this question got started... . Tell them 240mph, if they believe that the speedo is a determination of how fast the car will go, then they'll believe that... Tell them that the round Ford GT emblem/fake gas cap is a parachute too.

I used to love how mid 90's hondas and nissans had like 160mph speedos. I would love to see a 1.4 or whatever liter 93 accord doing 160

My Dad's 98 vette has a speedo that goes up to 220 or 240 i think, but i know that car cant reach that speed. People ask me all the time what my speedo goes up to...geuss it just shows how little some people know about cars.
