Thumbs up

OK, so I just picked up my GT on Friday and love it, but I've noticed a few strange sounds that I wanted to run by the crew. I've got the shift clunk. I've seen the other posts on this and I'm willing to chalk it up to my poor shifting. My last manual trans was over 10 years ago, so I'm probably just rusty. That said, I also noticed that there seems to be quite a bit of gear chatter. Is this normal? Listening to my transmission through the shifter, it sounds like a bunch of gophers being chewed up in there. I've also got one other noise which may be new (120miles on the car), but may have always been there but unheard due to blaring stereo or stomped-on exhaust note. This one is an intermittent sharp snap sound which seems to be coming from the rear of the car. It's almost like a cross between a match being struck and a watermelon seed being spit out. Maybe a tobacco spit through the teeth sound. It's pretty loud because I noticed over a rare low spot in my music. I believe that it only happens when the car is moving. I don't hear it at idle. Anybody else getting this noise? Even with the funky noises, I love this car.

I sometimes get the clunk, only at lower RPM's and low speed though. Pretty normal for stangs, my '95 does it sometimes, as well, my buddy has an '02 and gets it sometimes too. The only time I notice any tranny noise is at idle with the shifter in neutral, in gear with the clutch in at idle or moving, I don't hear it. As far as the spitting/snapping sound never heard that from mine.

By the way, congrats on getting your car

Are you sure the "snap" sound is coming from the rear. One common complaint is how loud the air conditioner clutch is when it engages and disengages. It is a quite loud snap or click every 20-30 seconds.

Thanks for the nanners. I think I figured out that the noise is the famous A/C tick-tick. I thought the noise was coming from the back of the car. My ears must be playing tricks on me. Maybe I'm just outrunning the noise, so by the time I hear it, it is behind me!

2 more to watch out for:

1. A rattling coming from the E-brake area (design issue here- there's metal on metal when the E-brake is not engaged. If you hear this one, you can put a rubber guard, or duct tape, over the metal - requires removal of center console) - there are detailed instructions on one of the threads here)

2. A rattle coming from the glove box (even when the glove box is empty). I haven't figured out how to fix this one yet (rather annoying)

oh, and btw... congrats!!

Yeah, I think I got it figured out. Mine cycles about every 7-10 seconds. Must depend on temperature and humidity. It is darn loud. I passed someone walking in my parking garage just as the noise went off and it startled him a bit. Maybe he thought I was spittin' tobacky at him....

I've got the shift clunk (my '97 chevy S10 has a much smoother/notclunky shift, but it's a utility truck, not a fun car), I've got the A/C click (which I thought came from the rear as well) although I have heard it at idle, and I've also got the gear chatter (sounds like my friend's Trans-Am when partially engaged at low speeds). So we are in the same boat. Luckily, I don't think any of this is particularly bad. I've also got the strut pop sound, which I need to take it in for. So you are far from alone, which makes me feel better too!

I have the glove box rattle too. It has been there for weeks, but I finally just figured out what it was. Apparently the door doesn't fit tightly enough, so it shakes as you are driving down the road. Any ideas on how to fix this one?

I've got the shift clunk only on occasion, only at low rpms, and only when shifting from 2-3.

I've got the shift clunk and the tranny noise as well. After reading the board, it appears to be an 05 mustang thang.

Go by a craft store and find some of that felt stripping that has adhesive on one side, the same kind of stuff some people are putting on their window strips to keep them from scratching. Cut a couple of small peices and put them on the inner lip of the door, where it contacts the box frame. This will cause the door to fit a little tighter and provide a soft contact rather than the plastic to plastic the way it is. If you have no craft store around, go to a Home Depot or Lowes type store. They sell these packs of self adhesive felt pads for putting on the bottom of furniture legs, to keep them from scratcing the floor. These come in different thickneses as well. Or they have the weather stripping foam that has adhesive on one side as well. Either would work, but the felt stuff will last longer than the foam.
