So long for now - I've gone over to the "Dark Side."

Well, after 22 years and 5 Mustangs:

It didn't have to be this way; thank the Ford dealership network and their collective gluttonous feeding habits. I was very interested in buying a Shelby GT or even a Shelby GT 500. After checking out several dealerships in the local area I was basically laughed out the doors for offering to pay MSRP. You've got to be kidding me, 44K for a Mustang with $2800 worth of FRP equipment bolted on?!? I've always lusted after a Corvette, but thought of them as too pricey - well, after my Ford dealership experience the Corvette started looking down right plausible. I'm a GM employee with GMS priceing, same as Ford A-plan (x employee actually GM-Hughes now Raytheon but we kept our employee discount - long story). Well, here she is:

Type 2LT
400 Ponies
6 Speed paddelshift auto
Transparent Removable Roof
and lots more - what a B E A S T!!

Links don't work, but good luck with the new ride. If you really like what you were after you might have found a way to get it thou. I know here if you belong to the mustang club they will drop the Dealer discount at the local dealer....

Good looking ride. I know if it wasnt for having one kid and another coming in a few years, then I would have chose a vette also. Im not much of a chevy guy tho and always loved my 89 mustang.

Rmays said it thou...I was at a smaller dealership one day coming home from camping and saw a gt500 in the showroom. The big cheese of the lot said he would take the flat price w/o any markup. Sooo just needed to be a lil more patient and look around.

Congrats! The 'Vette looks good After owning five Mustangs, I had a similar experience. I wanted to by a 2000 SVT Mustang. As we all know now, Ford never built one. I ended up buying a 2000 Corvette. It was a great car and I really enjoyed it. I ended up selling it to my dad a couple years ago. Now, I am back in the fold with an '07 Mustang.

Yeah same thing happened to my Mom. Asked about a GT500 (this was before they were out) and the guy at the dealership wouldn't even talk to her about it because he said she would need to drop 5k to get on the "waiting list."

She just wanted info about the car but he wasn't going to "waste his time."

So she promptly drove her '06 Mustang GT across the street to the Chevy dealership, and left with a new Corvette.

I drove it... it's a really complete car. VERY fast and handles like a dream.

I suspect Ford has lost a lot of future and current customers from their dealerships poor attitudes.

Good luck with the car man I think you'll love it

Two reasons why I don't have a Corvette:
A) Seats two (need someplace for the kiddos)
B) Fell in with the '05 body style.

Never was a fan of the fox body, but this Mustang called to me.

Good luck with your car! As always, its a shame the Ford dealers choose to gouge people for the new Mustangs.

Wierd must be that time of year that males have to get it out, when I got my car it was not Diamond coated , hood scoop replaced but tore the new hood liner still not replaced, rust proof spray I removed and was told I'd be compensated was renegged on. Sent this to Ford Canada today. The car does run great & everything, its the feeling so uncomfortable getting jerked around everytime I'd have to take it in so I've given up on them.
and too boot I met the fellow that bought my 05 GT and gave him the window sticker for it, he then said he was just about to take it in for undercoat & rust proofing STOP dude see here in my hand was the paper work that it was done so decline & get your money back any problem tell them to phone me , I'd give them an ear full and they have all that documented from when I owned that car Con artists now.

There are a few Ford dealerships that arent aholes, but for the most part, they lose Ford sales.

Back in '05, when I was ready to buy my GT, I called up just about every dealer in Arizona and each one thought I was crazy for trying to negotiate for under MSRP. At the time, they were going for as high as $5,000+ over MSRP and there were still back orders. (AZ is truck country, most dealers had little GT allocation). My family has always been GM, my dad has been a service tech at a GM dealership since 1968. My experience with Ford dealerships was going downhill fast.

I told one salesman I had more brains than money, he thought that was really funny, and told me "good luck with that."

Eventually, I was able to find a couple of nice salepersons posting here on TMS that were willing to take me up on x-plan and drop ship the car to AZ. I eventually settled with a dealer in San Diego (the closest, and the nicest). Got the car at the price I wanted, got some great pics of the delivery and a nice story to tell.

I always wanted to email that jerk salesman who laughed at me with a picture of me and my car, along with a copy of the sales price.

Anyway, I know there is no replacement for a handshake with the local dealer, but there are ways to get the car you want at a fair price, you just have to go beyond the beaten path sometimes.

There is a local couple here that got matching "his and hers" Shelbys: A black Shelby GT (hers) and a GT500 (his). I was told by a fellow TMS'er they got them both with no markup!

The dealership I got my 05 from was great. I ordered just what I wanted for no markup at a time when GT's were hard to come by. Then someone didnt want a car they ordered with the same options as me, the dealership gave me first dibs and didnt charge me anything to get it right away. They were great. Theeennn the whole GT500 thing happened. And that has turned me off to a lot of dealers. That was the moment when I realized most dealerships don't even have a clue about what they are selling. "Sorry I'm not paying $56,000 for a used GT500 with 3000 miles on it. And no thats not what they are going for on Ebay. Oh and its NOT TURBOCHARGED " But I still love my Stang and hope to have better luck with a Bullitt.

Good luck with the Vette. I think a lot of GT500 buyers were outpriced and put into the seat of a Corvette instead. I have driven a few and they are nice.

For years I had been back and forth between the 2 cars. I had 3 Corvettes in my time already, one of them was a ZR-1. The Corvette is a neat car, really it is and as American as the Mustang. I began to lose interest in the Vettes though, to me they became ho hum to drive. I sold my ZR-1 and bought the Stage 3 Roush, have not looked back.

Its really a personal thing, and for me the Vette just got old, I guess you just need to see where you belong, and you may very well find that the Mustang IS where you belong, as I did. I would not let a dealer keep me out of the car I REALLY want either. Best of luck to you.

If I was a little richer and a little shorter (6'4"), I'd have one of the new Vettes. GM finally got the Plastic Fantastic right with the C5. I've always said "drive what makes you happy". Congrats!
