My stock gears whine from 65-75 mph in 5th gear. It drives me crazy.

Also in the summer time I had noticed on a low speed turn when the windows were rolled down that I would hear a slight groaning noise. I'm not sure what is causing this, but that may be from the rear differential as well. I'm not sure if the TSB applies to me or not. Now that I have winter tires on I don't hear that groaning noise any more. I think if I brought it in they wouldn't hear it.

Anyway to fix both issues I believe the dealer would just put friction modifier in the differential fluid. What concerns me is that I plan on installing 4.10 gears in the spring. I don't want to waste Ford's money by fixing gears that I'm going to replace anyway. I'm more concerned about the groaning noise comming back when I put the more quiet stock tires on. If the noise comes back after I replace the gears I'm screwed because I voided my differential warranty, no?

What do you think I should do?

I would wait until you have the tires back on the car and bring it back to the dealership

looking at that TSB, you may be in for a new free set of gears. If that is the case, simply offer to pay the difference for the upgraded gear and any additional work and the labor is covered.

you might be right about the gears. I don't know if they can fix things under warranty using non-stock parts. Regardless I have some Ford Racing 4.10 gears on the way already. I think I'll just bring it in with the gears and just try to get them installed under warranty.

Has anybody tried getting 4.10s installed on a warranty replacement?

hmmm, I'll have to talk to the service manager. I was going to order a set of 4:10's and I am pretty sure I hear a humming noise. Sure, that humming might be me, but as long as I keep doing it when they are test driving the car all should be good

I made an appointment today for Monday, we'll see what happens. If the tech says no I'll get the service manager involved.

I just brought it in and they flat out refused to replace the gears with 4.10s under warranty. He must have said "factory is factory" 50 times. Ugh.

Oh well if they replace em I'm going to rip em out in a month anyway. At least I'll know it was fixed before I start messing around with it.
