"The geometry of a short throw shifter has been altered in such a way as to reduce the distance that the upper section of the shifter needs to move to achieve the same degree of movement in the lower section. The pictures below illustrate the stock throw versus the reduced throw of the TWM short shifter."

Basically it reduces the distance your gear stick travels to change gear.

Good short throw shifter will also feel more like a toggle switch for selecting gears, as compared to the relatively vague feeling of the stock shifter. It will also have stops, to prevent you from damaging your trans from over zelous shifting.

7. Is a short shifter hard to install?
All TWM Performance short shift kits include a detailed instruction manual which illustrates each step in the installation process. All kits require only simple hand tools to install and the majority of the installations can be done from inside the car. In some cases a jack and jack stands are required but anyone with only very basic mechanical knowledge is more than qualified to install a shifter. Also, to make installation as simple as possible we include any special or unique tools that may be needed so that you'll have everything necessary to install the kit.

On the 1-10 scale for "Bolt ons" about a 6. It does make a BIG difference. Check the "S197 performance mods" section for several shifter threads.
