Shaker 500 VFD different from Shaker 1000? Or is it a 2007 change?

I checked out someone else's Shaker 1000 in action and thought the VFD display looked different from mine (Shaker 500). Here's a pic of my display. Is it still the same as the 05-06 Shaker 500/1000s? I was hoping Ford changed suppliers to fix the skipper 500/1000 problems.

Ummm... it's not an LCD... it's a vacuum fluorescent display.

I changed it. I thought it looked like my VCR display! So how about it? is it the same as your 05 Shaker 1000?

That Looks like mine, only I haven't figured out how to turn on the RDS yet(I finally got an 06 model skipper after many bad 05 models).

I have the Shaker 500 and the display on mine looks different; the time readout is on the left side . Mine also has the "TEXT" function on the #6 button in the bottom row instead of it being between the "SEEK" buttons.

Haven't had any problems at all with my Shaker 500.

Doesn't really matter until I make it down to Orlando(land of radio stations that don't suck) I am using XM for now.

What you're seeing is the RDS option being on. And, as someone else mentioned earlier, you can position the RDS text on top or bottom - I've moved mine accidentally and don't remember how!

When playing CDs, the text block will show time and track and/or song title depending on the date of the CD - song titles for more recently recorded CDs.

You get to the RDS option by pressing on the menu key and holding for 1-2 seconds. And it's been like this since the beginning - my early 2005 Shaker 500 has these features. Incidentally, your owner's manual lays all of this out.

I'm not so sure that is it because VFDs aren't as flexible as OLED displays. Here's another pic of my Shaker 500 with more of the VFD elements exposed. Notice the clock and "ST" indicators are essentially permanently fixed in the spot. Even if I could flip the RDS info up/down, those stay in their positions. It looks like Ford went to a different display sometime between 06 and 07.

You're right - your display is lot more exotic than my early one! RDS is part of it but it looks like I'll have to check mine a little closer. Thanks.

I noticed the change on my '07 too. It had been 4 months since I sat in the '05, so it wasn't completely sure, but I knew something was odd. Looks like it was a mid-year '06 change, I am guessing.

It's not more exotic, just a slightly different display. I first noticed the difference when viewing the Shakers on 05-06 GTs in person and on TMS. I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I compared the displays side by side. I hope Ford did more than just switch displays, and went to a fully functional Shaker 500 unit that doesn't skip.

I've only had time to play the Shaker 500 while idling or parked because of the poor weather and my MP3s have not skipped yet. I did use my kick-a$$ Pioneer DVD-R/RW burner to burn them onto a quality Verbatim disc.

Also, the Shaker 500 came preset from the factory to display only the Song name for MP3s.

i noticed a difference when i sat in a friend's '07
the display now shows an 'mp3' box when playing mp3 CDs
and the text/scan/6 buttons are shuffled up like everyone mentioned

couldn't tell if there's any physical difference beyond the looks though

Your 500 display looks identical to our '06 Explorer's Audiophile head unit with the play/pause button on #6. We have the DVD player in our Explorer so those buttons do work for that too. The 1000 in my May built '06 GT is different and has the "Text" on the #6 as stated above. The display's don't really seem any different that I can see from everyone else's pics though.
