Oregon either. I get told to back off the pump when I am driving through. Old habits. I am old enough to remember when no one pumped their own gas. The attendant was right there. A fill up included a fluids check, air pressure check, and clean windows. All this self service stuff caught on about the time of the 1974 Arab oil embargo causing the price of gas to about double. From about 32 cents / gallon to 60 cents. That is when the idea to save a nickle a gallon by introducing self serve happened.

Next time, flip the switch as you enter the parking lot.

Ah, the memories from up North...WAWA is missed as are the Tasty Kake pies...not missing either the NJ motor vehicle inquisition (but some are definitely worse than others and, as mentioned, sometimes depends on the time of day, day of week, barometer, clouds in the sky...).

In Pennsylvania, there was a licensed inspection station my parents went to that was an old guy working out of a garage at the back of his property. He used jacks and jackstands and seems there was always something that needed to be "fixed" to be in compliance (admittedly, I last lived in PA in 1987 so things may have changed).

Last lived in NJ in 1991 and it seems nothing has changed.....

Ohio got rid of them too, at least here in the greater Cincinnati area.

Those who have never been to the Philly area and had a WAWA hoagie are missing out. I never knew such a tasty sandwich would come out of a gas station.

Hey, I'm in NJ and tell me did you go to the FREE State Inspection or did you pay for it at one of the local shops?

I've done the "FREE" inspection twice and passed both times with the sequentials.

we have inspections here in MD for our emissions but not yearly. i took the 2003 over last month for its 2 year inspection and the guy got out an under car mirror and started looking. as he came back around i asked him what that was for because they didnt do that last time i was here....he said it was to check to see if anything was hanging down from underneath that might catch the roller when they go over it...yea right. i think they were checking for no-cats. then they just plugged the car in (with my tune loaded) and green light came on...passed, thank you very much. on a positive note, they actually let ME drive the car this time instead of sending me to the "holding tank" till they were done with it. a big waste of time if you ask me.

We finally realized in Ohio what a waste of money the inspections are. It's all for the liberal "green" BS anyway. Now we just need to get rid of the front license plates.

In IL, when my '82 was tested, they put the sniffer up her butt at idle and 3k. Later the test changed and consisted of pulling the car onto rollers and having some "trained" idiot beat on your car to do a driving emissions test. I let the plates expire and reapply when I was due to go back to the end of the line.

Now they plug into the OBD port, read if you have any codes and you are done.

MadGT: The Meter4It kit is switchable between sequential, chase, and factory. Maybe this is the kit OP has installed.

I like the sequentials better than the chase.

Left New Jersey in 1989 and haven't been back. Didn't fit my personality. If you weren't honking your horn or flipping someone off, you didn't fit into the crowd.

Wawa hoagies are a staple for all single guys. BTW, the two footers are on sale for $9.99.

Of course it's a money maker. Duh.

But there's a benefit, at least here in Texas, to doing it. It only costs, uh.. $35? I can't remember. Something like that. Costs the inspector more to do it than you pay, actually.

Anyway, if they find something, you get to fix it. Period. That keeps the air better (supposedly) and the vehicles safer (hopefully) when they find bad brakes, bad steering, wheels, tires, signals, headlights, windshield... whatever.

I'd like to know more about the Ohio situation, actually. It sounds... interesting.

Unless you're talking the ECheck, in which case... yeah, probably. There was a huge fiasco about that emissions check station thing here... what a crock that was. A ton of wasted money...

I left NJ in 2003 and haven't been back. I've kept in touch with everyone but many of them seem to be leftist liberal anti-gun hybrid-loving hippies, but I still like them as friends. Michigan isn't much better, but there's no vehicle inspection, only 1 license plate, and no one cares how many rounds fit into my rifle and pistol magazines.
