Ford to Offer Sirius Radio as an Option in More Cars B)
By JEREMY W. PETERS

Published: October 18, 2004

DETROIT, Oct. 17 - The Ford Motor Company plans to announce on Monday that it will offer Sirius Satellite Radio in more of its cars and trucks and that it will begin installing the satellite radio systems at its factories for the first time.

After more than two years of taking a back seat to XM Satellite Radio, the industry leader, Sirius appears to be gaining momentum. This month, Howard Stern signed a five-year deal to broadcast exclusively on Sirius, starting in 2006. Sirius has also signed deals to broadcast games of the National Football League and the National Hockey League and to give Maxim magazine and the rapper Eminem their own channels.

But XM still maintains its status as the industry's giant, with 2.5 million subscribers compared with 600,000 for Sirius.

Currently, Sirius is available in nine Ford models; Ford will offer Sirius as a dealer-installed option in four more vehicles before the end of the year. Ford is the last of the Big Three automakers to offer satellite radio as a factory-installed option, and falls behind both Chrysler and General Motors in the number of vehicles with the service available.

General Motors currently offers XM on 57 of its vehicle lines, while Chrysler offers Sirius in nearly all of its 25 vehicles. Ford said it hoped to have Sirius available as a factory-installed option in up to 20 vehicle lines by the 2007 model year.

I talked to a BestBuy tech today and he said that you can get either XM or Sirius installed or install it your self.

You can replace the current head unit with an XM or Sirius ready unit..

or you can buy a seperate unit that stick off to the side. That setup is about $150 give or take.

Although I really do not want another unit off to the side, if I get satellite radio, this is the option I will do.

Sirius has been making some big moves lately aquiring new content. I think XM still has the bigger install base though.

ok, I haven't quite grasped this whole satelite radio concept thing. Is the question "will the mustang radio be able to receive satelite radio without any additional parts?" No, it will not. Can it take an input from a satelite receiver? I would assume so.
