Unhappy

I was just talking to a salesman at Vancouver Ford in Vancouver, WA, about ordering a '06 Mustang GT.... Turns out they markup their cars on the lot $5000  He justified this by saying "well, we need to sell these cars...."

He said they would cut me a "deal" if I ordered : they would only mark it up $2500 . He acted like they were really making me an incredible offer

$5000 Markup? Geez, I just want a Mustang GT, not a Ford GT....

It's a salesman tactic. He's always supposed to make you feel like he's bending over backwards for you no matter how bad he's trying to screw you. He's saying one thing and thinking the exact opposite.
Go to another dealer. Even if you have to drive farther. Get on the phone for the REALLY far away ones. If you are serious about buying a car, they can tell. They've had a lot of practice at it. If they're serious about selling you a car, they'll work with you more.

You should just order through ISELLFORD on these boards and he can order for you and have it drop shipped to the dealer in your area. I think there's a courtesy fee of $500 or so, but that's ALOT less than the $5000 you're being charged.

You're quite right about salesman... Luckily,I've found another dealer who says he'll take my order at MSRP.... I'm going in tomorrow and get started on the paperwork.

I think I do have a small advantage... I don't have to have a new 'stang right away because I have my '98, and I'm not too concerned about waiting a reasonable amount of time for an '06.

Thanks to all the board members here who have helped a lot by giving me good advice about the buying/ ordering process...

John, make a few more calls and you can probably get a dealer to factory order one at less than MSRP and do the drop ship if necessary. Here in Canada there is no additional charge for drop shipping so check that out too. Good luck.

That's exactly what I did. Drove back home the same day, all 600+ miles of it.

Price gouging is not a dealership trying to get as much as somebody will pay for a car. Stupidity is when somebody will pay that much!!!!

Same markup as the first dealership I went back when I got my GT...but at least there were no markups for a car you ordered (in any case I simply said thanks and walked out of there...)...they want you to wait AND pay a markup ? What would be the next step: ask you for sexual favours ??? Friggin' outrageous !

Shop around, I am sure you will find one at MSRP.

Just south of you, near Portland, Rob Hartzell at Thomason Ford in Gladstone got me my 05 V6 for MSRP in January. The GM tried to get in the way, waving his arms around, trying to get me to pay above price... ended up walking out. After I got home, Rob called me back and offered me $200 over my last offer... had the car the next day. Good man, he is... and, I hear the same GM is no longer there.

The dealers by me (Bay area, California) put a $9995 markup on the GT's. And people pay it. They put a $4995 markup on the V6 I bought, I managed to get it down to $2000 but when I originally told them I wasn't paying any markup, they said I could leave since someone would pay it.

I really don't understand how people are still paying markups. I built and priced my 2006 on forddirect and had 12 different dealorships calling, went by a few and they tried to get me to buy mark up, I showed them my list of the 10 other dealorships and that went out the door. They now call me and the best offer I have now found 3 dealorship for x-plan pricing.....its all amatter of time. In 2004 and early 2005, demand was so high , I could see dealorships marking up and people paying it but now.........come 2006 and 2007 Mustangs will be involed in family plan discounts......

I guess I should'nt be surprised that this is still going on.
You should just keep looking for the right Dealer thats what I did and I'm sure most here did.
Not all Dealers are doing mark ups.
The ones who treat me right get long term buisness from me.
Doubt you'll find one under MSRP though but Good Luck.

I am too.

Mustang sales have been sliding. Pretty soon there will be more 06 Mustangs on dealer lots then the dealers will know what to do with.

Point this out to the dealers:
Month ---- Sales
Jan - - - - 10,285
Feb - - - - 14,050
Mar - - - - 17,926
Apr - - - - - 19,559
May - - - - 19,721
June - - - - 14,470
July - - - - 10,577
August - - - 10,921

Since Ford is building over 16,000 Mustangs / month, it says that supply is now exeeding demand. Dealers who are charging over MSRP are running on borrowed time.

The July and August slide could be in anticipation for the '06s, so that is tough to determine. We will see in the next couple of months though.

The dealer by me was still trying to get $5k markup, on 05's no less. And that was about two weeks ago.
