We've heard a lot about the less than stellar fuel economy of the V8 / GT;

But, how is it running on the regular 87 octane fuel ? No pinging, sputtering, missing? Smooth running and acceleration? Good power?

Weigh in and let us know, guys and gals. Thanks.

Come on, folks. No one wants to report on engine performance on regular gas??

Is this an issue??

Against my instincts, I have been using 87 octane, and am happy to report that the engine does not knock, or do anything funny. It pulls strong, and I have no problem accelerating quickly to the posted speed limits .

Is the new Mustang engine not built to run on regular? As I understand if this car is built to run on regular, premium would actually end up damaging the engine right?

Kids these days. You gave everyone all of 17 minutes to respond? Some of us work for a living...

Runs great.

From what I understand the 3v engine is designed to run with full power on 87 gas, in which case running 93 would not provide any further increase in horsepower, you would just be throwing away the extra .20/gal...yet another reason to buy one

Sorry Bill, didn't mean to rush everyone. Typically new topics are jumped on almost immediately. I work too; had just returned home after being at the office since 6:30 a.m.

And, thanks for the compliment. I haven't been called a "kid" in, oh, about 35 years or so.

Glad to see the good reports. Just because it is "made to run on regular 87 octane" doesn't guarantee that it will; especially with a brand new engine. Twas just curious to confirm the performance, since I hadn't seen anything here on this subject.

Have a good one....

the 05 and 99-04 are designed to run on 87. the manual even states not to use "premium"

mine sputtered when I did a launch and hits a patch of sand on the road with the trac-control of. The fact that I probably hit 6500Rpm may be the reason You dont want to do this, hopefully the electronic throttle eased the damage. ouch. Other than that I haven't had any problems with 97 octane

Hmmm, I didn't know that the 99-04 were designed for regular / 87 octane. I understood that this was a new feature of the 2005 V8 engine.

I know the 2004 Mach 1 requires premium....but that must be different....

Isn't it funny, i got my 5.0 back in '88 to run on regular, then started using 94 octane after a few years, then went back to regular...that's when the problems(Pinging, loss of power) started, had to go back with 94oct...Everything is now back to normal, maybe that 5.0 responds much better to higher octane than modular engines....

Older cars have more carbon deposits which lead to hot spots, leading to pinging.

I can't see premium gas damaging any engine. You should be able to run premium in anything.

Runs great! My last tank of gas had 80% in-town & 20% highway driving and I got 19.7 MPG
