Rattle/chatter coming from the clutch or transmission at low speed. Any ideas?

Our Mustang has had a rattle or chatter type of sound for a long time now when driving at slow speeds (sub-20 MPH maybe). It seems to happen only when the car is moving, and happens in both first and second gear. A perfect example is driving in parking lots and driveways. I don't recall right now, but it may even happen with an early shift into 3rd gear. Does anyone have a suggestion of what it could be? It's rather loud inside the car, and it seems to me that it is probably pretty loud outside the car. Sometimes I feel like I'm driving an old beater around. I'm hoping it's something I could fix reasonably easy on my own because I don't feel like having that "it's normal" chat with my dealership.

By the way, it doesn't seem to matter if the car itself is warm or cold, along with the outside temperature. Also, it has happened before and after installing the axle-back, so I don't think it's exhaust-related.

There are a couple of TSBs on this.

One is for the plate in between the engine and transmission making a buzzing sound. Mine does it while turning left shifting from first to second gear only.

The other one is the heat shields making noise between 1.5k and 2.5k.

Can't remember the TSB #s. A quick search should give you something to look at.

I forgot about checking the TSB's. I'll do that now. Thanks for the reminder/help.

i had the same type of problem with my clutch. does it last a long time or does it fade away after 10-20min? mine would make an awful racket for about 10-20 min and then fade away quickly. I brought mine in for a look see and they found that the flywheel was rubbing on the engine seperator plate. There is a TSB out for this problem. they had to resurface the flywheel and replaced the clutch while the tranny was out. it was an expensive repair, i will warn you! cost me about 1k after it was all said and done. it may seem kind of high but most people i talked to said that the going rate.

Mine makes noise rarely and I have 17k left on the warranty. If it gets worse, I might do something about it.

If it were for the first 20 min every time I drove the car, it would be at the stealership on Monday.

Wait a minute. There is/was a TSB on the problem and they charged you $1,000 to fix it? Was your car out of warranty? I've only got 19,XXX miles on the car and it doesn't matter what the temperature is or how long it's been running. It did it today with a temp in the '80s and after an hour or so of driving.

If the noise can be duplicated on a regular basis, get a copy of the TSB and take it to the dealer. They LOVE it when you know what is going on with your car and they can't give you the "we couldn't duplicate it " speech.

I purchased my car back in 04. I placed my order in June and picked up the car the day after Vetern's day. So the warranty ran out a while ago. sounds like you have the same problem I did. Good Luck

I see. I'll probably be making an appointment soon to bring mine in. I'm sure it'll be productive.
