Radar detectors??

I am new, and this is my first post. What a great forum.

How many of you guys/gals use radar detectors? If you do, where do you put it? Do you velcro it to the top of the dash and run the cord into the powerpoint above the radio?

or do you hardwire it in? Has anyone done this?

I was thinking of hardwiring it and running it to the powerpoint located in the console armrest bin.

Thanks!

I don't use one. I use the cruise control to keep speed, but its not foolproof as the dry hump I got in July attests to.

I've never owned one, not really sure I believe they even work. I had a buddy who always had them in his cars, all they seemed to do was chirp randomly and really go nuts near malls.

Even if they do work, wouldn't you be nailed by the time the detector went off?

They're illegal here in Holland so no, I don't use one.
However, my brother has one and it saved him many times already.

I have the Escort 8500 X50B Passport Radar Detector with the laser jammer. This thing has saved me twice and I have only had it 3 months. Well worth the 1k purchase and install.

Before you start flaming me or the cost, the laser jammer does exactly that, jams police laser guns. I know it worked as I was doing 65 in a 40 and the cop had me nailed for a good 4-5 seconds as I slowed down. As I was passing him, he literally pulled his gun back and looked at it, as if to say "WTF!?" I laughed and drove on, praising the 1g I spent. If you know anything about lasers you know it takes less that a half second for the cop to get your speed.

I have an Escort and it works only if the patroller leaves the radar on all the time. If they turn it on only after spotting you apparently speeding, you're pulled over.

Just carry a tube of Astroglide in your glove box from now on. Then everything will be fine the next time you get "bent" by the long arm of the law.

Lemmie get this straight: pot and prostitution are legal, but radar detectors are verboten?

Aparently you've never heard of POP detection.

I didn't even get the lube that time. It was a total shawshank redemption moment.

I am under the assumption radar detectors only work if a cop is actively running radar. Youre screwed if he just passes by and throws the gun at someone in a pack.

I have the top four inches of my windshield tinted (as well as all the other windows). I have my radar detector mounted right next to my rear view mirror and I ran the power cord (with extenstion) around the headliner, down the a-pillar, under and into the center console and it plugs into the outlet inside the center console.

All wiring is hidden, you can't see the detector from outside the car (or inside, unless you look hard), and it has saved me a few times now. I did get one speeding ticket, because I had my radio turned way up and didn't hear the detector going off, but saw it at the last second.

I quit using one when the speed limit went up to 70. I normally drive at 77 or 78 with no problems.

I have one and voted for the first option.

It has saved me quite a few times, and it always detects them.

Spend money on mods... don't waste it on non working detectors

If it always detects them... the police aren't out trying to write speeding tickets. Take a run though my patrol area... I'll give you a pretty piece of thermal printer paper and then the judge will lighten your wallet a little. I don't write people unless they talk themselves into tickets with one exception. If I see a radar detector or your brake lights are mysteriously controlled by my hold/transmit button... you're getting a ticket. Radar detectors are are considered presumptive evidence that you have already recieved warnings/breaks in the past and you're not getting one from me.

I got a radar ticket for going 66 in a 65 in San Diego. That's why I use a radar detector now.

No attitude, nothing. CHP said " Do you know how fast you were going "? I said "65". He said "try 66". That is the entire discussion.

Cops *are* out to write tickets.

Those types of comments from a Trooper are the reason I just bought a Radar detector. Whether it's your God-complex or the additional revenue generated from these tickets, I want some protection from speed-traps and Troopers with something to prove. I never speed where the limit is less than 55 mph. I usually exceed the posted limit when on Hwys and interstates when traffic is light. Every ticket I've received was on rural Hwys where I was obeying the basic speed law. The troopers saw it differently every time. Never had a radar detector (until now), never got just a warning, but I always got a ticket. Perhaps most importantly, I didn't realize Troopers could use "presumptive evidence" in issuing tickets. That should alarm many people. Sounds to me like you should have been a judge instead.

Radar detectors are not illegal in my state.

I have never been pulled over, and never gotten a ticket.

When you own a car that even looks sporty, the cops are out to get you, and there is no denying that. (and if you do, you've never owned a sporty car) I've seen my brother get screwed over by police where I live, and it's hard to be on the cops side for traffic citations. No one takes them to heart anymore, they don't mean hardly anything anymore. Those that violate them, most of the time, violate them again and again. Plus, with quotas that most stations issue, it makes them even more worthless to people.

I support law enforcement officers, however, I do not support those that don't abide by the law, those that issue unnecessary traffic citations, and especially those on a power trip. In fact, I plan on being a law enforcement officer sometime in the future, after I am done with my military career.
